Audi considers Diesel-powered S cars.

One thing that I haven't seen anyone mention is the fact that diesel engines weigh more than their petrol counter parts. If you remember, I posted a Top Gear episode where they tested the 535d. They did say that it is one of the best diesels ever made, but on the track, it was slower than the 545i. They blammed it on the weight of the engine, which is made of steel.

I wouldn't mind seeing a performance diesel car, but I'd rather have them label them as a 545dsi or something. Diesels do not belong in ///M or Rs. Regular S cars maybe.

I agree with that....

BMW makes their diesels out of steel?
According to Top Gear, diesel engines in general are made out of steel. For the 535d, they had to modify the suspension to accomodate the extra weight actually.

you will NEVRE see BMW do an M diesel.. or a hybrid for that matter, hydrogen? That's a possiblity.

Turbo M cars that get better gas mileage might be a possibility. Maybe theyll use camless turbo charged engines that get decent mpg while delivering a greater amount of hp.

The future of gas saving begins with Camless engines, what you guys think.
I'm going to make a thread dedicated to that topic.

It's been said that the W204 C class will be the first car to feature such technology.

If thats true then Mercedes is ahead of the curve because that is the exact next step for getting better performance and gas mileage, although it will require a more powerfull CPU.

Er, I think Warot probably meant cast iron. I'm not sure anyone makes 'steel' engine blocks, per se.

IIRC, BMW (or someone?) now have an alloy block diesel.

I'm just quotting word for word from TG, sorry. I really don't know much about diesel technology to be quite honest.

Just checked, they use aluminum blocks with iron cylinder linings, at least for their V8.

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
