Was in the area and decided to stop by at the Audi Forum in Ingolstadt. They had some interesting cars, mostly concepts, on display. Enjoy! :)

The 1991 Quattro Spyder, 2003 Nuvolari and 2010 Quattro Concept were all seriously considered for serial production. A pity that none of them actually came to fruition.

Agreed. And I had totally forgotten what awesome and cool-looking concept cars Audi has produced until I visited the museum again. :)

Thanks for sharing. I remember looking at photos of these cars on a 1024x768 monitor over 10 years ago when instagram and youtube didn't exist!

However the Tt made production and almost 25 years later the concept still looks visionary. What an icon!

The Avus resembles a Veyron from the front and is, like the Bentley Hunaudieres, a proposition for a W16 car that VAG decided to badge as Bugatti.

The story has it that Audi/VAG bean-counters quashed all hopes of the apparently numerous corporate yay-sayers. It had been calculated that a production Quattro Spyder would have had to have been priced at well over 100K D-Marks in order to have been at least remotely financially viable. And back in 1991, that would have been an immense amount of money for an...Audi. A Porsche 964 Carrera 4 coupe could be had for approx. 116K D-Marks back then.

The situation regarding the 2010 Audi Quattro Concept was very similar. For it to be financially viable, it would have had to command a list price well in excess of 100K Euros.

As for the 2003 Nuvolari: Modifications necessary in order to have made it production-plausible (steel rather than aluminium sheetmetal, shortened D3 A8 platform and thus questionable proportions) would have altered the spirit of the concept so drastically that Martin Winterkorn, then Audi CEO, circular-filed the project very quickly.

Sometimes, concepts are brilliant but the timing isn't right. In 1991, Audi was a "third" choice of a premium brand behind Mercedes and BMW. Fast forward to the launch of the R8, post iRobot movies, and consumers were willing to spend Porsche money on an Audi.

That was a gorgeous concept and I was sad to read that it didn't get green light for production.

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
