German automakers blitzkrieg the awards
The Audi A3 has been named the 2014 World Car of the Year.

A panel of 69 automotive journalists selected the car over the BMW 4-Series and Mazda3 because it offers a "silky smooth ride," a "superb choice of engines" and four body styles. They concluded the A3 "packs a hefty premium punch in the small luxury segment."

According to Audi Chairman Rupert Stadler, "The Audi A6 was the first ever winner of this award and we are delighted that the Audi A3 has repeated that achievement by being voted 2014 World Car of the Year. The Audi A3 showcases Audi’s technical competence in all aspects of carmaking, not least in the areas of lightweight technology, drivetrain, mobile infotainment and driver assistance systems. This major award win is an achievement that the whole company can celebrate."

This year's other winners include the Mercedes S-Class which beat the Bentley Flying Spur and Range Rover Sport to become the 2014 World Luxury Car. The Porsche 911 GT3 took top honors in the World Performance Car category, while the BMW i3 scooped up both the World Green Car and World Car Design of the Year awards.

yeah, and almost always was. s class win was deserved tho

My friend is thinking about buying a S3 sedan, it comes in at nearly 50 K euro.. its a damn robbery..

And he likes the CLA, but the AMG is stupidly expensive and maybe a step up from the S3, more of a theoretical RS3 competitor.

he hate's bmw so no go there.

And i really can't find a better alternative for him, but it hurts me that he is paying FIFTY K for a S3..

Of course. If the award is given to a car you like, it is deserved, but if it is given to a car you don't like, it is a joke...

I actually think this is one of the better accolades out there given the methodology they employ in awarding it. There are more than 65 jurors in all lines of the business from more than 20 different countries.

It is about as conclusive as a 'Car of the Year' award can be...

No surprise with these awards. VAG products have won 9 of the last 15 awards and placed in the Top 3 14 of the last 15...

Good win for the A3. It is a good car.

Yes. The 8V A3 offers a broader and more exensive line of powertrains (and drivetrains) than the BMW 4-Series. There is an e-tron, g-tron, gas, and diesel options in both fuel-miser guise all the way up to high performance offerings in either FWD or AWD.

How does that not make sense? They didn't say the engines were better (even though they score better too) but that the choices are better. As in there are more of them to choose from and they are all great (even if not better in this particular case).

You could maybe use the International Engine of the Year awards to see who does it better there too;

Collective score among all motors that received awards;
VW/Audi - 3,612 pts.
BMW - 2,807 pts.

Maybe could can explain to us how this methodology chose i3 as Design of the Year. I can't fathom why this was given to the i3 and not the i8.
