AM, planning a mid-engined car?
Aston Martin may challenge Ferrari building its first mid-engined supercar. That is possible after Ford’s sale of the British sports-car maker to a consortium led by Prodrive’s David Richards.
“Aston has to look at some of the things that are being done by our competitors, like the Audi R8 and the Japanese brands. We believe we can expand quite considerably.”, Richards said.
So Aston will add a range-topping, mid-engined supercar, which is an obvious gap in the company’s lineup.A mid-engined car isn’t part of the company’s plan at least officially.
Aston CEO Ulrich Bez, speak about a new Aston flagship codenamed NPX: “It’s a sign of the confidence of the company that we could put a model above the Rapide. There is definitely room above Rapide for a supercar like NPX, but details, like where the engine is, are still a subject to be discussed.
The future NPX supercar probably would be priced at around $500,000, compared with the 400.000$ for the next Aston Martin Rapide.
Aston was a very small company, sensible to have two completely different body architectures, but now, after a big success and having access to a larger pot of capital, Aston may be capable to build a mid engine supercar, an obvious gap in the company’s lineups.
