JLR designer Jordan Gendler has presented his interpretation of a future Audi grand touring automobile. His particular exercise leaves me highly impressed as he's captured what I personally believe is so essential to sound automotive exterior design. Enjoy the eyefeast.:

I'll be honest Jimmy but I'm not quite seeing the "eyefeast".

What really impresses me is how Gendler has proportioned and sculptured the lower 2/3 silhouette. While hardly "original" per se (and most certainly far from "revolutionary"), it represents a theme reflective of a "classic" beauty immensely suitable for larger grand touring cars. Very clean with impeccable perception of ideal clearances (overhangs, wheelarch/wing & haunch crest dialogue, distance of A-pilar base to front axle hub). Also the rear overhang with the tapering that smoothly blends the haunch with the delicately curved rear skirt really catches my eye. The rear wheelarches are confidently bulged without resorting to excessive theatrics, the sill under the glasshouse in blending with the front wing/rear haunch tendon is powerful. The thin indentation that divides the flanks just under "the halfway point" subtlely alleviates excessive vertical mass and flows very nicely into the lower rear lamp-strip and headlamp housing. Granted, the side glass/roof height are a bit caricaturesque in the degree of their "shallowness". I love the super-slender lighting units. And those rims are off the charts.

I must admit, I usually trust your judgement Jimmy, but you've dropped the ball on this one. I just don't see it!

I reckon that I'm just a conservative old chap (NOT to be mistaken with "reactionary" or "traditionalist", however). I simply relish this modern but not fashionable, clean, pragmatic exercise on a well-established, "classical" grand touring theme. IMHO, this could suitably be translated (with necessary tweaked applications) into a new Jaguar XJ...or some sort of successor to Audis' A8 (perhaps the designers' intention)...

In any case, I appreciate the input.

Well Jimmy, I don't share your view on this, but if most people put even a quarter of the effort into explaining their opinion on a design as you have, the world of automotive discussion would be a far far better place.

I like it very much, this reminds me of the great concepts a la rosemeyer they used to make, this is the first TT - first A6 Audi continuation.

I find it interesting, especially the side profile. Though, assuming the intention for this was a BEV based on what I presume are electrical ports on the front fender, why not explore outside the limitations of what an ICE platform provides, i.e. long hood for what would have housed an engine?

Mind you, that question is more for the designer than you, Jimbo. I curious what the thinking is for a BEV that's more personal luxury GT than what are full-on lounges on wheels that are more like vans.

I dreamt about Jimmy and this car last night. I shit you not.
In my head I thought it had elements of Steampunk. Does it?

I think that you've got a good point, my friend.

The thin, dark flank strip, for example, is an element that could be found on a few Bertone-penned concepts of the 1960s'. There are certainly elements that have been "borrowed" from the Bugatti 57G ("Tank") of the late 1930s-and perhaps even from its' Type 32 predecessor from the early 1920s'. Those are valid old school...really old school actually...meets modern arguments.

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
