Alpine Alpine Sport Fastback Sedan

Société des Automobiles Alpine SAS, commonly known as Alpine (/ˈælpɪn/, French: [alpin]), is a French manufacturer of sports cars and racing cars established in 1955 and a subsidiary of Renault Group. The Alpine car marque was created in 1954. In 2024, Alpine started producing electric vehicles by rolling out the Alpine A290.

Alpine is preparing a sporty fastback sedan! The return of the A610 name?

Exclusive. While Alpine had planned a D-segment crossover for 2027, this project has been aborted. This information was confirmed to L'argus by Philippe Krief, the brand's CEO. Instead, the manufacturer is preparing a fastback sedan based on the APP model of the A110 and A310, a sort of BMW M3 with a Dieppe twist.

According to several reports, Alpine will expand its sports range with an all-electric fastback sedan. It will join the A110 coupe and convertible, and the four-seater A310 coupe.

At the Renault Group's general meeting in May, Luca de Meo detailed Alpine 's future by projecting the silhouettes of future models onto a screen. We noticed that one model previously planned for 2027 was missing: a fully electric D-segment crossover meant to support the brand's international expansion, particularly in the United States. We couldn't find a better person than Philippe Krief to confirm this information.

Alpine 2024 product plan

In 2024, this plan was revised, notably due to the arrival of a new boss, Philippe Krief. He confirmed to us that the A490 project had been canceled in favor of a fastback sedan.

One SUV too many!

The brand's boss granted us an interview and confirmed that he had canceled this project for a D-segment crossover. He considered that, among the three crossovers initially planned by his predecessor (A390, A490 and A590), there was one too many. If the A390 (C-segment) is to be marketed from autumn 2025 on the European market only, the A490 (D-segment) and the A590 (E-segment) were mainly intended for international markets. Except that these two models were designed in partnership with the Geely group, due to the lack of an available platform in the Renault group. However, at the same time, Alpine is developing its own APP technical base, which must be made profitable. Consequently, Philippe Krief has reoriented the product strategy by keeping only the large A590 crossover, whose main markets will be Asia and the United States.

“A kind of electric BMW M3”

Alpine APP platform Alpine sports sedan

The future sports sedan will use the APP base of the A310, which is distinguished by a battery housed in the floor. This is not the case on the A110.

In the industry, there's no secret to profitability. Philippe Krief, a former Ferrari executive, knows this very well. It comes either through price or volume. For Alpine, it's necessary to find the right balance. The future A110 (coupe and convertible) and A310 ranges remain in niche markets. Based on this, the boss sought new commercial prospects and decided to expand the catalog with a sort of " electric BMW M3 ." The German manufacturer is also working on an M version (code ZA0) of the future i3, probably for 2027-2028. This deadline also corresponds to that of this future Alpine, which could take on the historic A610 name. And technically, you might ask? Here again, Philippe Krief has revised the APP platform (set in spring 2024) by giving it greater flexibility and technical possibilities in the future. A subject on which L'argus will soon provide you with details.
