Amongst the various bombshells dropped by BMW at this year's IAA, with the introduction of the i8 and the absence of the M4 Concept being two examples, Alpina is introducing the diesel brother of the B3, Alpina's entry level model based on the 3 series. The extremely successful and proven straight-six 3-litre diesel with Bi-Turbo charging, known from the D5 Bi-Turbo and most recently also the XD3, now finds its way into the new and multi-award winning BMW 3 Series with 350 bhp and 700Nm of torque. The top speed is 278 km/h, the first 100 km/h come in 4.6 seconds while the fuel consumption is kept at a stunning low of 5.3l per 100 km and an equivalent CO2 emission of 139 g/km.

At the same time, the LCI of the B5 and D5 is officially introduced. Power remains unchanged at 540hp (397kW) and 730Nm for the biturbo V8 gasoline powerplant and 350hp and 700Nm for the D5, which features the same engine as the D3. Both 5 series-based versions transfer their power to the rear wheels through a SWITCH-TRONIC 8-speed Sport Automatic Transmission from ZF. The only changes for the LCI are essentially visual, and include the updated front and rear bumpers and lights.

An extensive photo gallery comes after the jump.
