6-Series ‘estate’ is a shooting star

BMW readies practical Shooting Brake version of next coupé, set to debut at Paris show, while CLS rival is also on the way

The trigger’s been pulled on a new niche model at BMW! Product development chief Dr Klaus Draeger has let slip that the firm’s board is considering a Shooting Brake version of the next 6-Series.

He confirmed that a concept – styled by design boss Adrian van Hooydonk – has already been built, and is likely to be unveiled at October’s Paris Motor Show. BMW could recycle its Gran Turismo name for the concept, and will use the event to gauge public reaction before deciding whether to give the car the production green light.

Based on the Gran Coupé four-door displayed at the Beijing Motor Show earlier this year, the Shooting Brake forms part of the brand’s plans to widen the appeal of the next-generation 6-Series.

The two-door coupé and convertible arrive next year, while Draeger confirmed that the Gran Coupé will also be built. This four-door Mercedes CLS rival will arrive in 2012, and be positioned in the range close to the new 6-Series. It will be aimed at customers wanting a more practical version of the 6-Series two-door, or 7-Series fans who prefer to drive themselves.

The Gran Coupé doesn’t have a hatchback tailgate like the Audi A7 or Porsche Panamera. Instead, BMW has opted for a saloon bodystyle, which is preferred in the Chinese market.

It will use the same engines as the new 6-Series – this means power will come from BMW’s 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol and diesel units, as well as a range-topping 4.4-litre V8. “Since we use the same drive architecture as the 5, 6 and 7-Series, we are [also] able to bring a hybrid version,” Draeger added.

EDIT: I can't find that this has been posted already - sorry, if it was posted already. :)

It is too small for a Shooting Brake. (see John Sibal's interpretation)
Also been watching many US automedia outlets claim the prototype photographs of the 1er 3dr are a new Shooting Brake variant?

It is just the (European) only replacement for the current (European) only 1er 3dr Sporthatch.:eusa_doh:

But yes the BMW Board like the new 6er Shooting Brake Concept that it is more "when" rather than "If" that it will go to low volume series production.

Hmmm, I´m afraid I´m not too convinced about your avatar, SCOTT, please tell it looks better in bigger.

So, as I supossed, the 6er Shooting Brake will debut in October.

Scott 27 > could you tell us if the pic posted by human is a good interpretation of the rear and profile next 1 3 doors ;)

Perhaps Scott can kindly furnish an answer to the following questions:

Can we expect a "functional" 6 series Gran Coupe Concept car presentation at one of the larger automobile shows taking place either towards the end of this year or the beginning of next year ? Say Geneva 2011 at the very latest.

Also, is there any news regarding the rumored 6 series Shooting Brake ?

Admittedly, I'm quite "hyped up" regarding these particular future (hopefully:eusa_pray) BMW offerings.

The 6er is the only car that BMW has made that has been only a coupe.

The E24 was a coupe. E63/64 added a convertible to the updated 6 series coupe. Rumor has it that they are about to update the two of these again.

Why bastardize the line with XTrucks and 4 door "coupes"? BMW seems to be slipping to the same brand blurring Mercedes has succumbed to...A la the "E" coupe, dumping the SEC for a CL coupe that has no linkage whatsoever to the C line.

There are lots of numbers left. Let 6 mean coupe.

Historically, and currently you're both correct, of course.

2-door GT would have been accurate for the current and upcoming 6 model run. I see 3 coupes as several degrees more towards sports cars, and the roadster as a roadster. I see Gran Coupe as a sedan.

I just think BMW is making a mistake to shirt-tail completely different vehicles off the 6.

Brand management is a delicate thing.

Blessing a sport ute or a 4 door with a brand that originates with the E24 is at best a non sequitur in any case. If they foul it up, they will diminish the loyalty 6 owners have for the two door GT cars [coupe or open] they have so successfully built.

-----------------

8 would qualify for GT as well. When I think 6 I start with E24. To Betty's point, the 8 outlasted 2002's...
