GT [Renders] 2016 Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series

The Mercedes-AMG GT is a series of 2-door sports cars produced by Mercedes-AMG. While not directly replacing the SLS AMG (competing in a different segment), it is the second sports car developed entirely in-house by Mercedes-AMG.

Mercedes-Benz’s AMG performance division has already started work on an ultra-high performance version of its forthcoming GT coupé, company boss Tobias Moers has told Autocar.

‘Why not?” said Moers when quizzed on the prospect for a high-performance AMG GT.“A street-legal version of our GT3 racing car – that sounds like a pretty good idea.”

The new car will be targeted directly at the Porsche 911 GT3 though it will use neither that name nor be a Black Series model. “GT3 belongs to the other company,” said Moers, “we will find another name for our car.”

Moers would not be drawn on when the new car will be available but confirms the FIA GT3 racing version of the GT will be available from the 2016 season to replace the immensely successful SLS GT3. It would be logical to introduce the road car in a similar timeframe.

The target for the car, said Moers, is a package that excels in every area. “I don’t want to make a dragster that’s only good for doing 0-100km/h [0-62mph] in 2.8sec. We need more power, less weight, better aerodynamics and different suspension but the targets should be the power to weight ratio, drivability, lap time and tremendous feel.”

The aim for the new car will be to reduce weight by 80-100kg compared to the 1570kg S version of the GT, a task Moers admitted would not be possible without using different materials. “The car is already 80kg lighter than the SLS and has a similar power to weight ratio, so to lose much more weight we will need to use carbonfibre as we have with our Black Series models.”

He was less easily drawn on how much additional power will be extracted from the new 4.0-litre V8 twin-turbo engine, though admitted it would be fair to speculate it will be around the 550bhp mark, a near 10 per cent power increase on the more powerful (503bhp) of the two engines available for the GT at launch.

Making that power from the engine should be straight-forward as the engine shares its internal architecture with the 2.0-litre four-cylinder motor used in the likes of the A45 AMG, from which 355bhp is already extracted. He added: “That doesn’t mean we can get 700bhp from the V8 – it is not as simple as that – but the V8 is currently very understressed.”

A 550bhp GT weighing 80kg would provide a power to weight ratio of 369bhp per tonne compared to the 312bhp per tonne of the current Porsche 911 GT3.That should be enough to knock its 0-62mph time back from 3.8sec to a traction-limited 3.6sec.

Top speed is unlikely to increase from the current 193mph, as Moers is keen to equip the car with considerable downforce even at the expense of extra drag. AMG now employs an entire department of aerodynamicists for the first time in its history.

The new car will also receive a wider front and rear track to help mechanical grip. The entire package should lop 10 or more seconds off the GT’s Nürburgring lap time, which currently stands at 7min 30sec using, as Moers put it, “standard tyres, not special compounds designed to last just a few laps”.

I assume next year's F1 safety car will be the AMG GT instead of the SLS AMG, in which case we might get a preview of what the Black Series might look like.

Tobias Moers, boss of Mercedes’ AMG performance division, confirmed that a hardcore version of the GT sports coupe will be launched at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in June.

Speaking to evo at the Geneva Motor Show, Moers confirmed that the more powerful model would be badged AMG GT R. It will use an uprated version of the 4-litre, twin turbo V8 that powers the existing GT and GT S models.

The GT R will get more power than the 503bhp GT S, but ‘less than 600bhp’, said Moers. It will also use a wider body and wider front and rear tracks to improve dynamic ability.

As well as a more aggressive chassis tune and track-focussed tyres, the GT R will utilise a raft of new technologies such as active aerodynamics and rear-wheel steering – the latter a first for AMG. It won’t be stripped out in the manner of a Porsche 911 GT3 RS, however.

‘It’s a different character [to a GT3 RS],’ said Moers. ‘It’s our character, our interpretation of a super performing GT.’

If rear wheel steering is indeed confirmed, it shows that this technology is set to become a standard on high performance cars (Ferrari, Porsche, now AMG... who's next ?).

How much successful is AMG-GT? Has Mercedes-AMG could do enough numbers to justify bringing a volume sportscars in place of a fancy supercar? In most market I studied, I couldn't find AMG-GT as a hot cake waiting to be crab the moment it has been baked.

I think the AMG GT R looks more aggressive than those renders, the real AMG GT Black Series will have more serious body changes in my opinion. Wider fenders and bulging wheel arches, bigger air intake openings in the front and bigger rear diffuser and exhausts plus a bigger power bulge on the bonnet. The alloys will also be different as those above are identical to a standard GT S.

One thing, mods (@Giannis, @Monster, @martinbo) would it be better to remove the year "2016" from the title as more likely the Black Series wont be launched this year?

So is this the one that finally gets the 6-odd litre engine on which the GT3 car's is based?

This will be a sub 7 minutes car for sure. Probably 650PS, 3,2sec to 100 and 9,3sec to 200, awesome grip and handling to match

Mercedes-AMG GT R Black Series Caught By Motor1 Reader In Spain

And now, thanks to an anonymous Motor1 fan, we have a few more crisp images of this as-yet unnamed Merc. The car was spotted in Mojácar, Spain a couple weeks ago, spending some quality time with an AMG GT Roadster. Not only does the gray roof and black spoiler match one of the cars we saw in the video, the number plate is dead-on exact.

The camo print does a good job of obscuring body lines, so its hard to tell if there’s additional bulk to the rear fenders. There’s no question the rear fascia is from the AMG GT R, and the rear wing appears to be standard GT R as well. Unfortunately we don’t have a good look at the front of the car, but there does seem to be some extra kit down low on the very front of the fasica, sticking out to the side. That would match what we saw in the video, suggesting this could well be a Black Series prototype.

It looks as though our anonymous friend caught the pair of AMGs just as they were leaving, but it’s certainly enough to whet our appetites for more. If Mercedes is planning to amp up the GT R, we’d expect to see at least 600 horsepower and enough handling tweaks to make this already capable car an amazing track machine.

Is This The Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series? Prototype Targets Porsche 911 GT2 RS
Ever since Mercedes-AMG introduced the GT, it became obvious that Affalterbach's machine would deliver serious competition to the Porsche 911, even without the 2+2 layout of the Neunelfer.

And now that both the 991 incarnation of the 911 and the Mercedes-AMG GT have received their mid-cycle revamps, the war between the two is more obvious than ever.

As you can expect, the main battlefield here is the Nurburgring and, despite the two companies sometimes pretending like there's no fight going on, Affalterbach and Zuffenhausen make great efforts to dominate each other in terms of the stopwatch.

For now, the unofficial trophy sits with Mercedes-AMG, since the GT R has set a 7:10 lap in a Sport Auto test - keep in mind that the magazine approach means that an official lap would be even quicker.

As for Porsche, the sharpest Ring tool (the 6:57 918 Spyder doesn't count here) in its current lineup is the 991.2 GT3, which needs 7:12.7 to go round the infamous German circuit.

However, the 2018 911 GT2 RS, whose Ring lap time had not been made public yet, will certainly be a member of the sub-7m club, with the rumor mill going as far as talking about a new production car lap record - this would imply beating the Lamborghini Huracan Performante's 6:52.

And this is where the Mercedes-AMG GT prototype in the video at the bottom of the page steps in. We first spied the twin-turbo V8 animal earlier this week, when we talked about it as a road-going version of the recently-introduced Mercedes-AMG GT4 racecar.

However, this could be the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series. Given the traditional all-out character of Black Series models, such a contraption would be perfect for fighting the 700 hp Rennsport Neunelfer.

Regardless of the badge, the prototype that blitzes the Nordschleife in this video doesn't seem to pack the side exhausts of the one we previously spied, but it does have the same rear wing and camo-covered rear hatch.

And we'll remind you that, like the GT2 RS, the test car we spied last time had a polymer rear window.

Until we get our hands on fresh info, you can enjoy the aural might of the AMG Green Hell Magno-covered prototype, which fills up the entire track with its V8 growl.

Could an even more extreme Mercedes-AMG GT be on the way? Faster still than the monster GT R version?

These photos suggest so. Spied testing on the road and at the Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit, this AMG GT variant is thought to be a road-going version of the recently launched Mercedes-AMG GT4 racing car.

It’s thought that the fastest AMG GT road car yet may carry the Black Series title, reserved for AMG’s wildest models. If that’s the case, it would be a natural successor to the SLS AMG Black Series of 2013.

But it looks pretty much the same as the existing AMG GT R?
Biggest giveaway is the exhaust arrangement – like on the GT4 racer, the tailpipes are integrated into the diffuser on the left and right, whereas the regular AMG GT R has a central exhaust exit.

The diffuser and fixed rear spoiler appear otherwise similar to those of the existing GT R, but further aero developments are likely to follow, together with minor styling tweaks to separate the models.

Expect less weight, courtesy of reduced sound deadening and lightweight components, and more power too – although the GT R is already pretty well-muscled at 577bhp, we already know the same 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine is capable of being stretched to 600bhp+ from its duties in the E63 AMG saloon and estate.

Further spyshots in the gallery show the disguised car being back-to-back tested with the GT R on the Nordschleife. It’s being pushed to the limit, and indeed a bit beyond in a few of the photos…

Will this new model really be called the AMG GT Black Series?
It seems likely; AMG boss Tobias Moers has previously hinted that a Black Series AMG GT model is in the works.

Although the GT4 name has previously been rumoured, to tie in with the racing car, it seems unlikely – the same name is already being rumoured for an upcoming four-door AMG GT model, and besides, it numerically implies a lower level of performance than Porsche’s trademarked GT3 model name…
