Next generation Kia Optima to showcase confident new design direction
World premiere to be held at 2010 New York Motor Show

(SEOUL) March 14, 2010 – The next generation Kia Optima (currently, also known as 'Magentis' in some markets) is set to make its world premiere next month at the 2010 New York International Auto Show.

"The next generation Optima possesses the power to surprise," says Peter Schreyer, Kia's Chief Design Officer. "It's a car that people will simply not expect from Kia – and that's exactly what we set out to achieve."

The Optima exudes an athletic confidence from every angle and shutline – its raked roofline, the high and pronounced shoulder line of its sculpted flanks and its extended wheelbase are complemented by boldly flared wheelarches and a shallow glasshouse that create a saloon with a muscular and self-assured stance.

The striking visage of the Optima features a new interpretation of Kia's bold 'tiger' family face that's edged by piercing projector headlamps.

Longer, wider and lower than before, the Kia's coupe-like profile is enhanced by the sweeping chrome arc that flows from A to C pillar, a distinctive design motif that visually lowers the car further still and enhances its cab-backwards proportions.

Spacious, and with class-leading levels of safety and luxury equipment, the Optima's intelligently configured and driver-oriented cabin underlines this newfound poise and presence.

"The Optima embodies Kia's confident new design direction," says Schreyer. "It's a global car with individual appeal."

The Kia Motors press conference for the New York International Auto Show will take place on April 1, 2010 from 10:10-10:35 a.m. at the Kia Stand on Level 1 of the 'Jacob Javits Center' located between 34-39 Streets on 11th Avenue in New York City.

My only comment: For a badget car, this KIA Optima looks bloody fantastic. Kia really raised the bar with this!

I'll be once again the one who's not impressed. To me this is Automotive Design: The Story so Far - in other words a mix of things that have gone before. It's not an ugly car, just derivative... except for the bottle opener grille, which for some reason bugs me a lot.

The affordable large car segment is starting to get just a little overcrowded, and in a time where customers all around the world are downsizing to smaller midsize models, performance, fuel-economy and overall value is now more important than ever. South Korea’s entrants in this field have been winning plenty of accolades lately, especially newcomers like the Hyundai Genesis and recently revealed Kia Cadenza, but Kia is working on another large car that by the looks of things will only continue this trend.

The all-new 2011 Kia Optima is set to make its world debut this April at the 2010 New York Auto Show and in the lead up to the unveiling the first images of the car have been released, including this new shot of the interior. Hopefully the curvaceous and muscular body, LED tail-lamps and sporty profile will help to erase the boring whitegoods-on-wheels look of the current Optima.

The Optima will remain Kia’s flagship and in keeping with this positioning the car gets a longer wheelbase than the current model. It will also be wider and sit lower.

Kia is yet to reveal any official details but the most likely engine options will be a pair of gasoline V-6 units, a new 3.5-liter mill and the current 3.8-liter unit found in the Hyundai Genesis. There will also be a hybrid version launched further down the track.

The 2011 Kia Optima will go on sale this fall.

This time I'm on your side, though this is not an ugly car it's not a goodlooking one neither. It reminds me a lot of Lexus, they're not ugly cars but they are like as neutral as a car can be, don't say anything to me.

Surprisingly, very good lookng car from KIA. The interir is reminiscient of current Audi/Saab lines. I'm actually willing to go to a KIA or Hyundai dealer and check out their resepcetive midsize offerings. To me, that says alot of how far they progressed.

Report: Kia mulling Optima/Magentis coupe and wagon - will they come here?

Autocar is reporting that Kia may be mulling wagon and coupe variants of its just-announced 2011 Optima. The wrinkle is, however, that both the proposed long-roof and coupe versions of the car would designed with both Europe and Korea in mind. So far, there's no word on whether or either bodystyle would make its way to the States, though Autocar quotes Kia Chief Designer Peter Schreyer as saying that a two-door variant would do well in our neck of the woods.

Kia pulled the sheets off of the next-generation Optima at this year's New York Auto Show. Both longer and wider than the previous model, the 2011 Optima (known as the Magentis in other markets) appears to have good bones for growing into a wagon. Given the number of good-looking mid-size wagons we've seen crop up lately (we're looking at you, Cadillac CTS/Acura TSX), there's certainly room in the market for a more affordable load lugger.

We wouldn't exactly hold our breath, though. It'd likely take at least a couple of years to get the design through concept stage and into production, and even then, odds are it wouldn't be headed our direction. Doesn't hurt to hope, however.

...This is really a suprise from Kia. Car looks way more upscale then previous Kia models.

Very nice indeed. It's a design that says "Audi you've misssed out so we took it".

I'm considering getting one of these, a 2011 Kia Optima HYBRID model. The reason I'm considering this car (aside from it being a great offering in this segment, and a good candidate for what I might need a "second car" for), specifically the HYBRID aspect, is because there are a couple of Dealers next to me that have overstocked 2011 Hybrids that they are Leasing for LESS than Kia's Leasing their base models for. Pretty crazy deals that I kind of don't want to pass up. The Hybrid aspect is fine and all, but the big win here is the standard tech, features, and aesthetic equipment that come with the Hybrid line, making it far more appealing than the Standard model.

If anyone has any knowledge on this particular Optima model, long term, nuances, etc., please let me know!

This car is selling like hot cakes here! Kia has done an amazing job to make such a car happen with tough competition around. 2 thumbs up! :usa7uh:

I saw it IRL @ JIMS and it looks good in and out. That said, it is and stays your typical rep-mobile of old. Will get boring in short time.:sleep1zh:
A new and fresh VW Passat with a more avantgarde design is what the Germans need to keep this Korean in the showrooms;)

Kia Optima T-Hybrid diesel-electric concept introduced in Paris with electric supercharger

Kia Optima T-Hybrid concept at 2014 Paris Motor Show

15-20 percent more powerful than standard model
Kia has unveiled at Paris Motor Show the interesting Optima T-Hybrid concept, following an online reveal at the end of September.

The mild hybrid Optima concept combines the standard 1.7-liter four-cylinder CRDi turbodiesel engine with an electric motor which has bumped output by 15-20 percent. The conventional engine has been equipped with an electric supercharger providing more power in the entire rpm range but especially at low engine speeds when the vehicle benefits from extra torque.

There's also a 48V lead-carbon battery allowing the concept to be driven only on the power provided by the electric motor at low speeds. During deceleration, the generated energy is transferred to the battery pack which does not need active cooling compared to the usual lithium-ion batteries. Other changes include a stop/start system and a new belt-driven starter generator which significantly decreases the noise and vibration generated during the engine's start.

Aside from packing more punch than the regular Optima, the T-Hybrid concept also provides a "significant reduction" in both fuel consumption and CO2 figures. However, the concept is still being developed so a production version is not on the agenda yet.
