Volkswagen will add to its Convertible line-up a new model based on the next generation Golf that will be unveiled in 2008. The Golf Convertible will use the same technologies used in the Eos, but Volkswagen expects the new model to have a better success than the Eos, those selling are going down.
The new generation Golf Convertible wants to be, next to the Beetle Convertible, “an icon for the Volkswagen line-up.” But, until the launch of the new Convertible Volkswagen has in plan another Convertible, the Audi A3 that we reported about yesterday.

VW Golf Cabrio: Coming in 2010!

VW Golf Cabrio: Coming in 2010!

The new VW Golf which is said to arrive in 2008 is the most important new model for VW, therefore it will be published in more derivates, eg. the VW Scirocco in 2009 but also as VW Golf Cabrio in 2010. Nice!

The VW Golf Cabrio will not be produced at Karmann as in the past, it will be manufactured in one of VW's own factories in Germany.
It's planned to sell 35.000 copies per year with an additional price of 4.000 Euro compared to the limousine.

Re: VW Golf Cabrio: Coming in 2010!

Believe when I see it.

Polo Cabrio is more likely ;)

Re: VW Golf Cabrio: Coming in 2010!

Overflow of VW cabrios ...

Eos & Beetle cabrio already available, Polo cabrio, Golf cabrio & Scirocco cabrio reported to be in development.

:t-hands:

Re: VW Golf Cabrio: Coming in 2010!

Isn't the Eos based on the Golf already, so what is the point of this new Golf Cabrio. I think VW is smart to market the Eos as a stand alone model because it is perceived has having a more upmarket image than a Golf. So why would VW create a Golf Cabrio when people will see it as in inferior product to the Eos.

Re: VW Golf Cabrio: Coming in 2010!

COnsidering the relatively high price of the Eos, I suppose there is place for a cheaper Cabrio. I iamagine it will be a ragtop verion. :t-hands:

Re: VW Golf Cabrio: Coming in 2010!

I thought th Eos was the replacement of the Golf Cabrio. if they want to slot an other cabrio below the Eos they should make a Polo Cabrio. This news is BS.

This is ridiculous. Audi/VW is starting to look like a complete shambles -- it's like there is some kind of family feud going on here ....like VW and Audi are engaged in some kind of battle for supremacy.

So where does this fit into the scheme of things? ...because this looks more like a Golf cabrio than anything VW has produced in years.

Rob I wouldn't read into a Golf Cabrio actually happening just rumour.

What will replace Golf is the Polo which is smaller than the A3 Cabrio.

New Beetle Cabrio is aimed at US Market consumption only :usa7uh:

Great new Golf Cabrio raises the roof
German firm plans drop-top version of its family favourite.

The lid has been lifted on VW’s next open champion – meet the new Golf Cabriolet! One of the best-loved cars in the history of the German brand returns to the line-up next year.

On sale in the UK at the same time as the rest of the Golf MkVI range, the Cabriolet will give sun-seekers a cut-price alternative to Audi’s new drop-top A3. It will also compete with more mainstream models such as the Ford Focus CC and Peugeot 308 CC.

As you can see, the VW bucks the current trend for folding metal roofs and instead has a traditional fabric top – as with every previous generation. Its state-of-the-art hood is shared with the A3 Cabriolet, and will provide the Golf with a classy look.

It has a multi-layer construction for impressive refinement at high speeds, and as with the Audi, the mechanism will be fully automatic – owners simply press a button on the dashboard or the key fob to operate it.

The roof can be lowered or raised with the car moving at up to 20mph – a process that takes less than 10 seconds – and once down, it sits flush with the bodywork behind the rear seats.

The soft-top bodystyle sits perfectly with the evolutionary lines of the latest family car range, which include a fresh grille. But it still gets traditional Golf design features, such as a rising waistline and chunky C-pillars.

Inside, there will be space for four people, with legroom on a par with the three-door. The roof will cut into boot space, but the Golf has always been one of the most practical drop-tops, so expect fold-flat seats and a ski hatch to make the most of the room available.

VW has developed the latest Golf under tight financial constraints – the project was given a relatively small budget as the MkV has proved expensive to build – so it’s amazing that a soft-top has been produced at all. Yet this won’t prevent the Cabriolet from offering superb quality and generous standard kit. All models will get air-con and Bluetooth connectivity.

Under the skin, a simple multi-link rear suspension layout will cut produc-tion times and costs. To make up for the loss of the roof, the A-pillars, side sills and floorpan are reinforced, and strong steel rollover hoops added.

Engine options comprise 158bhp 1.8 and 197bhp 2.0-litre TFSI petrols, plus 104bhp 1.9 and 138bhp 2.0-litre TDI diesels, while VW’s twin-clutch DSG transmission will be an optional extra. The Cabriolet will debut alongside the rest of the new Golf range later this year, with sales starting early in 2009.

A VW legend revived

THE Golf is one of VW’s most popular cars, but Cabriolets are rare – the new MkVI will be only the fourth in its history!

Best loved model is the original. Launched in 1980, it proved such a big hit, VW continued to sell it when the MkII Golf arrived in 1993. It was designed by drop-top expert Karmann, and is now seen as a classic. There was even a GTI, with the hatch’s 1.6-litre fuel-injected engine, plus BBS alloys and a reinforced bodyshell.

Even at launch, all cars had a heated glass rear screen and front bucket seats. The big step forward came in 1990, when an electric roof mechanism was added. By comparison, the second and third-generation (above - yellow) soft-tops – launched in 1994 and 1998 – were overweight, dull to look at and not as entertaining. Now VW is hoping it’s backed a winner with the MkVI-based Cabriolet.

The only thing I really like here is the blackened top of the A-pillars.

Seriously, the new Golf will (from the pics I saw) look uninteresting and boring just like the Golf V...

And like already mentioned, Eos+Golf Cab+rumoured Scirocco cab = nonsense.

Why another VW cabrio????? :t-hands:

Eos is already there in the same segment!!!!!
Polo canvas-top cabrio would make much more sense. B/c Golf cabrio can hurt Eos sales big time. Same size, same engines, same interior - the only difference is canvas vs metal roof (advantage for Eos), different exterior styling (advantage depends on taste preferences), and a huge price advantage for Golf.

VW will have 4 different body styles in the same segment: 3dr hatch Golf, 2dr cabrio Golf, 3dr sportshatch Sirocco, 2dr coupe-cabrio Eos. Can VW really afford so many different body styles in the same segment????? Not to mention other VAGs brands being present in the same segment as well (Audi A3 & Seat Leon).

I agree witn EnI :usa7uh:

VW should just make a Polo Cabrio (and let Karmann build it before they go under :()
