W114/W115 1969 Mercedes-Benz 220 W115

The Mercedes-Benz W114 and W115 are ranges of front-engine, rear-drive, five-passenger executive cars and coupés introduced by Mercedes-Benz in 1968 to succeed its W110 models introduced in 1961. Featuring squared-off modern three-box styling by Paul Bracq, they were manufactured until model year 1976, when the W123 was released.

For sale, only 26,130 km (after the shoot). That's 16,331 miles!

Excellent condition, zero rust and very comfortable. The choke was interesting - when the engine was started it needed a different mixture. Carburetors, so old school! :D

Here are some snapshots from after the shoot.

Was it originally registered in France? It’s a beauty by the way, Christian.

If I remember the history of this car correctly from my quick chat with the seller, it was actually ordered by a customer in Austria and spent its life there.

The car appears to have a number of interesting modifications such as an RPM counter and of course the French-spec headlights. :)

I'm old enough to recall the brouhaha that was generated when the W115 "Strich Acht" was presented in late 1967. Having just reached 14, I rode my bike to the nearest Auto Henne (Munichs' main M-B dealership network at the time) showroom in order to grab all introductory brochures available. What particularly fascinated me was the page in which side-profile illustrations (not photographs) of all then-available M-B car ranges (W115, W108/109, W100, W113...) were featured.

The W115 quickly became absolutely ubiquitous. Black diesel examples quickly replaced the W110 "Fintail" as THE prominent taxicab.

...and 2-3 years later, I saw Roberto Blanco emerging from the driver seat of a medium-blue metallic W108 280 SE 3.5 while riding my bike down the Schwanthalerstrasse.

Ein bißchen Spaß muss sein...oder ?

Fantastic anecdote, Jimmy.
I’ve got one as well. Saw former chancellor Helmut Schmidt visiting former Dutch prime minister Dries van Agt at his private home (we lived only a few streets away). Must have been 1977. He was driven in a W116 450 SEL, I mean it was a 6.9, astralsilber.

I may be wrong, but I am 99% sure Helmut Schmidt was chauffeured in a 350SEL.

Then again he may have had several W116 limousines. But a 6.9 would seem a little too much for an SPD politician! :D

Any limousine is too much for a SPD politician ;)
It’s over 40 years ago, so I’m not going to argue, you could very well be right. The mind plays tricks with our memory...

The family of a schoolmate friend of mine were the next-door neighbors of former German international and FC Bayern football star Gerd Müller and his wife Uschi in München-Solln of the early 1970s'. I recall that the Müllers drove a pale yellow C107 450 SLC.
