This car has had the same owner the last 30 years and been in storage due to ill health the last 20 years.
The previous owner bought it in 1962 and owned it 20 years during which time he rebuilt the motor. It has gone 7000 miles since the rebuild.
Before that we don't know the history but we do know that Mercedes did several things when they made this car that they typically only do for their show cars. This may have been the Detroit Auto Show car in 1955. It has factory chromed exhaust manifolds and polished intake manifold. It has the NSL motor which is stamped on the block. An NSL motor is one with more horsepower and supplied for competition purposes. Only 10% of these cars were supplied with this motor.
This is one of the first 50 cars made by Mercedes to satisfy the production racing homologation competition rules for 1955. The first 50 cars are different from all of the later cars making them sort of a pre-production series in between the prototype cars and the 1300 production cars. These cars have a different grill with a concave star, a gooseneck stick shifter that sticks directly into the transmission which is more precise, lower gear ratios, and many other differences making it much more sporty...
