A spectacular Bugatti 57SC Sports Tourer from 1937 was recently sold for $9.73 million during Bonhams' second annual Amelia Island auction.

What we’ve got here is “the most valuable Bugatti ever sold at auction and the most valuable car ever sold at Amelia Island,” according to Bonhams. This is a Bugatti 57SC Sports Tourer with a custom body produced by British coachbuilder Vanden Plas and a chassis number 57541.

This particular Sports Tourer was delivered new in New York in 1937 and was showcased during the London Motor Show a year later. It has a 3.3-liter V8 DOHC engine with a Stromberg carburetor, delivering 200 horsepower (147 kilowatts) at 4,500 rpm. The power is channeled to the wheels through a four-speed manual gearbox, while stopping power is provided by four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes.

At the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance the car gathered interest among bidders with a starting price of $6 million. The bidding quickly rose to $8 million and finally it was sold to a private American collector for a total sum of $9,735,000. Before the auction, the Bugatti was valued $11-13 million.
