While the Type 54 was not the most successful racing Bugatti of all time, among its greatest successes were winning the 1933 Avus race with Achille Varzi at the wheel, and the one-hour 213 km/h endurance record set up by Count Tscnaikowsky. According to legend. Ettore Bugatti is supposed to have built the car in only 13 days. The car was powered by the faithful 5 litre straight- eight motor, which, assisted by a big Roots supercharger delivered a very respectable 300 horsepower. Even this, however, was not enough to compete with the mighty Mercedes and Auto Unions from Germany. There were eight complete Type 54's constructed and two chassis which were never used.
