Roger Penske, by all accounts, did not fool around when fielding a car. As David Hobbs explains, when he drove this Ferrari 512 M during the 1971 racing season, Penske insisted on discipline. The cars were spotless. The team wore uniforms. The Europeans thought it was silly. Then the Ferrari kept getting on pole. It was fast, and Penske's attention to detail—and of course, the power and finesse of the V12 fitted to the higher-downforce, lightweight body—changed the game.

But it never won.
