Volvo Universe Concept Shanghai '11

Looks like the Geely chairman got his way with this proposal for an upper crust Volvo. Nice mix of new 9-5+A7+740+Amazon.

This is Volvo’s Concept Universe, the first indication of the company’s future direction under Chinese ownership.

Unveiled at the Shanghai motor show, the Universe is described by Volvo as a “large, luxurious sedan with a new human-centric design language that honours the beautiful lines of classic Volvo models”.

Stefan Jacoby, president and CEO of Volvo, said the Concept Universe offers “a sneak preview of what people can expect from our next top-of-the-line sedan”.

Peter Horbury, vice-president of design and in his second spell as Volvo’s creative director, said, “The Concept Universe is exceptionally refined, yet with all the simplistic assets that make Volvo champions of the uncomplicated. There is a growing appreciation for this ingenious blend of design and technology among modern luxury car buyers. We are convinced that our special brand of [human-centric] luxury has a great future.”

According to sources at Volvo, the Universe is not based on a specific platform because the company’s future platform and engine strategy is still being finalised. However, although the concept does not quite breach five metres in length, Volvo sources suggest that it would not need to be lengthened for the Chinese market because of “best-in-class interior space”.

Volvo exterior designer Jonathon Disley said the Universe project began 12 months ago, when the company’s designers were asked to consider a new form language for Volvo. They spent two days in the Volvo museum “looking at classic models from a different viewpoint”.

Disley said, “We felt that the most classic models were soft and voluptuous but also offered a sense of protection. We had a request from chairman Lee [boss of Geely, Volvo’s owners] to reflect the serenity in light when the sun is rising or setting and to create something intriguing in the nose.”

Work on this model took just 17 weeks from the final sketches to the clay model, which was milled directly from computer drawings.

The Universe’s bonnet sculpting is drawn from the Volvo PV544, as is the grille shape and low-set headlights.

However, the unusual nose design is in stark contrast to the rest of the car, which has a contemporary ‘four-door coupé’ stance and modern rear light cluster detailing.

The sides of the Universe are also heavily sculpted, a clear link with previous Horbury-era Volvos, including the S60.

Inside, the concept has a clean and modern four-seat layout, dominated by a raised centre console running through the cabin, which has been stripped of nearly all conventional switchgear. Instead, it features large touchscreens, retaining just a conventional speedo.

Described by interior designer Conny Bengtsson as “tranquil and lounge-like, embracing the passengers”, the interior detail includes business suit fabric on the doors. The only obvious nods to Chinese design are in the blue and white porcelain detail fitted to the steering wheel and shift lever.

Not feeling the front; but it's only a concept. I do like the rear, though. It seems, IMO, that Volvo is doing a better job than MB at making connected rear lights. The Concept A's look like an afterthought. Looking forward to seeing the interior.

Interesting, novel, some details really good, as the front.
Does not seem to copy any current vehicle.

Agreed. After a long while seems Volvo is finally stepping up.

I'm digging the unique-ness of the front, but I'm hoping when it does transition into production form, it translates well. The side profile is nice. The rear is nice but rather derivative of the Jag XF and the Fisker Karma.

This is a good jumping-off point for Volvo.

Looking at that car, the first thing that came on my mind is the Jaguar B99-concept. And ever since I'm kind of lost. :eusa_thin

It pains me greatly to suspect that should a production version become a reality, it will be substantially watered-down.

A pity because the concept is really quite excellent. Especially the side profile with absolutely spot-on proportions and the rear end are simply magnificent. Exactly how a large luxury sedan should be done.

It is particularly handsome from this angle. Looks a little like the Saab 9-5, just a little.

It sure isn't a small car. Is this my wish finally coming true? A large Volvo.

The front is an acquired taste.

Yup. Bad idea.:t-cheers:

Not at all. Volvo is now a Chinese domestic brand! With worldwide reputation!

Be sure top-end Volvo will be a seller in China!

Also: it has some American design genes in it. So, I'm sure it will sell well in US as well (if priced & made right).

While Europe is entirely in BMW/MB/Audi domain, so it's not a key market for this car. But with a bit extravagant yet simple & solid Volvo-like design I'm sure it will be popular in Russia & ME as well. I imagine it especially as a typical "wife's sedan". :D Or an alternative to high-end VW sedan.

The design itself? I like it. IMO it communicates Volvo well. More than the current Volvo design!
The proportions look great! Very RWDish.
Make the headlights a bit bigger (more stretched + different graphics), and you have a winner here!
Interior looks fine as well: simple, upscale & tasteful. Very Volvo.

IMO they incorporated typical Volvo brand (design) values extremely well. Much more successful than eg. Jaguar did with latest Jag models.

Ok, I have to admit that you are bringing up a quite interesting point of view that didn't even cross my mind when I was writting my above post. And indeed it is quite interesting.

But Volvo going upmarket? I doubt it has the image!

As a typical (yes... I admit) Volvo owner I can't see how this brand could be forced to go upmarket, based on the current core values of the Volvo name.

As for the concept's design, I find it somehow strange, but it could work.

I have been looking at this thread all morning. I am going to be honest, when I first saw the pictures of this car I was blown away at how disgusted I was. I felt like Volvo was going in the wrong direction, it was not even that unique with respect to design and boring.

I started to read the posts and the remarks about how people were loving the car. So, I went back and kept on looking at the car and seeing it over and over again and I started to see a mesh between Rolls Royce & Jag but no volvo. I guess the hood and the U-shape of it is the volvo trademark?

I think I can say I am starting to appreciate this concept. However, I cannot say I am a fan of the front. I mean, to me it looks bad, boring, and squarish.
