86 Toyota FT-86 II Concept at Geneva

The Toyota 86 and the Subaru BRZ are 2+2 sports cars jointly developed by Toyota and Subaru, manufactured at Subaru's Gunma assembly plant. For the first-generation model, Toyota marketed the sports car as the 86 in Asia, Australia, North America (from August 2016), South Africa, and South America; as the Toyota GT86 in Europe; as the 86 and GT86 in New Zealand; as the Toyota FT86 in Brunei, Nicaragua and Jamaica and as the Scion FR-S (2012–2016) in the United States and Canada.

Toyota has confirmed that it will launch its new rear-drive coupé in 2012 — a car previewed by this latest version of the FT-86 concept at the Geneva show.

Dubbed FT-86 II, the concept is an evolution of the car first seen at Tokyo in autumn 2009. It is claimed by Toyota to be “the clearest indication yet as to the final design of Toyota’s next sports car”.

The new concept confirms that Toyota’s European design team could not make the original’s ultra-low bonnet line comply with pedestrian impact regulations, despite it being fitted with a Subaru-developed horizontally opposed engine.

Other changes to the original concept include a more heavily sculpted front bumper, a more angular front grille and a deeper front splitter. Strips of LED daytime running lights also feature at the front, and a larger fixed spoiler is added at the rear. There is also a new design for the alloy wheels.

Toyota says the car “doesn’t rely on a heavy, large-displacement powertrain for its performance”. Instead, it has a 2.0-litre engine that is, along with the driving position, set back as far and as low as possible for a low centre of gravity and optimal weight distribution.

Subaru has been Toyota’s development partner in the FT-86 project and has displayed its involvement at Geneva with its Boxer Sports Car Architecture concept. It features a clear plastic body that hints at the car’s eventual design and allows its chassis, engine and suspension package to be showcased.

Yeh that's nice n' all, but if that engine doesn't come with 2 turbos, then the performance is not going to come close to matching the looks and emotions of this car. A sportscar for the masses indeed it could be, but with a 2.0L naturally aspirated engine it'll just be a sporty-car.

I wonder how Toyota will price this..should be intriguing!

Wow, interesting coming from Toyota. It was already obvious, in this day and age and all (as everybody is doing it), that Toyota was gonna try and go more extraverted, aggressive, and move away from the dull image that has gotten them so largely popular to the masses. This car may just be the proof of that.

I wonder if it's gonna be an Accord Coupe segment'er, or if it'll be expensive?

Looks basically like a Japanese Continental GT.

My oh my! Toyota finally got hold of a designer/s with some creative mind/s:eusa_clap

Front looks crazy. Actually looks like it's from a different car, compared to the more subdued sides.

For sub $30K, this could be a big popularity winner for them. I think it's pretty nice for a Toyota especially.

Yea they need to go ahead and approve it for production. They might even go ahead and smack the supra name on it.

A little extra info regarding its dimensions:

Aside from the updated shape of concept 2.0, Toyota didn’t have much to share on the car. It did tell us that this version of the concept is 166.7 inches long—with a 101.2-inch wheelbase—70.7 inches wide, and 50 inches tall. That’s within two inches of the Nissan 370Z in those dimensions, although the Toyota’s naturally aspirated 2.0-liter Subaru flat-four will trail the Z’s 332 horsepower by about, oh, 130 or so. (For those that hated math class, that means this car should get about 200 hp.) That said, this car is likely going to be much cheaper than the Z. Based on what we've learned about the Subaru version of this car, the suspension should consist of struts up front and multiple links out back, there will be a 2+2 seating layout, and the curb weight should come in around 2800 pounds. A turbocharged version, at least according to Subie, is "always possible."

Yeah, I'd have one as a second car. Along with the 4C Alfa, a great, youthful, alternative to the 1-series coupe. "Much lower" price than the 370Z, would mean something like €30,000 here in Europe*... nice.

*)Excluding crazy countries with car-hate taxes.

Probably the best affordable sportscar. Light, "cheap", still powerfull (100 PS/l) and just may favorite concept: front engine, rear wheel drive, naturally aspirated, manual, 2 seats (+2).

Welcome to the next big thing from Japan! I'm pretty sure, its gonna be a big hit. Btw, the ruthless ricers are already worrying me! :D

The last Rwd enthusiast cars from Toyota were Supra & Mr2. And after looking at that thing, looks like the waiting was worth it! :usa7uh:

Nevertheless, the real Trueno will always be missed. What a beauty that was!! :eusa_clap

For some reasons, its side profile reminds me of the new Scion Tc. I guess its the rear side glass. :eusa_thin

It does and that is what I was trying to put my finger on it.

I think this car looks nice, but as a whole I don't like it. Like the front is nice, the back is nice, the side is okay, but when you put it all together it doesn't flow the way you'd want a nice looking sports car to look like. Granted, this is a Toyota so anyone can argue that it is the nicest and sportiest Toyota to date that would be affordable, but if Aston Martin or BMW were to make a car like this we'd all say that it is ugly and what were they thinking. So, forgetting who is making this car, I am not a big fan when the design comes together. Maybe in another color it would change my mind, but right now not a big fan.

Oh, this might get very interesting. The design will definitely be toned down from this, but I can already see the possibilities. Also, why make this a 2+2? It's small and that back seat seems useless unless you are a baby.
