No model with the four rings is closer to motorsport, none is more striking and more dynamic: at the Geneva Motor Show, Audi is presenting the second generation of its high-performance R8 sports car. The V10 mid-engine and a newly developed quattro drive ensure breathtaking driving performance, especially in the top-of-the-range version with 449 kW (610 hp): achieving 0 to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in just 3.2 seconds, its top speed is 330 km/h (205.1 mph).

That interior is so clean and crisp that I wouldn't expect anything less from Audi on their halo car...The exterior is a little too similar to the old one, but fresher to say the least
 
Interesting, just like BMW in i8, Audi will also provide LaserLights "upon request". That just confirms how exotic still this tech is.

Available upon request, Audi can also supply the laser spot which doubles the range of the high beam to 600 meters (1,968.5 ft) as well as the dynamic turn signals at the front.

As part of the new laser high beams, one laser module per headlight generates a cone of light with twice the range of the all-LED headlamp. Each module comprises four high-power laser diodes. With a diameter of just 300 micrometers, these generate a blue laser beam with a wavelength of 450 nanometers. A phosphor converter transforms it into white light suitable for roadway use with a color temperature of 5,500 Kelvin – ideal conditions for the human eye that enable the driver to recognize contrast more easily and help to prevent fatigue. The laser spot is active from a speed of 60 km/h (37.3 mph) to supplement the LED high beam of the R8 and, thanks to its long range, greatly enhances the driver’s field of vision as well as safety. An intelligent camera-based sensor system detects other road users and actively adjusts the light pattern to exclude them.

I wouldn't call it exotic, I'd call it extremely expensive to manufacture, but like all new things the price will start to tumble pretty quickly.

As for the R8, it's a very pretty car, but it looks like a facelift of the existing car rather than an all new model. It's an R8 not a 911, Audi don't have to keep the same look going for generations, they should be building something new and fresh with each generation.

Interersting that the V8 isn't mentioned, what's up with it, or has it been dumped?
 
Exterior is "ok", nothing special and in fact i wasn't expecting something completely new... Inetrior on the other side is amazing, much better than previous model... (y)

Love the performance figures and power, it will be a blast to drive for sure.
 
Following yesterday’s leaked photo, Audi has finally taken the wraps off the second generation R8 supercar which will receive its public premiere next week in Geneva.

Embodying the pure definition of an evolutionary styling, the overhauled R8 has received a familiar singleframe front grille with a honeycomb pattern flanked by standard flat LED headlights or optional laser lighting clusters which double the range to 600 meters. The side profile shows curved contours and a prominent shoulder line interconnecting the wheels and also dividing the side blades in two which according to Audi makes the car look longer and more dynamic.

Moving at the back, the LED taillights also adopt a flat configuration and sit above generously sized air inlets providing a muscular appearance. There's a retractable rear spoiler while the Plus model gains a fixed wing manufactured from carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). The large diffuser sits between trapezoidal exhaust pipes while the rear window should provide a gorgeous view of the R8’s beating heart.

Speaking of which, Audi's revamped R8 comes exclusively with an uprated V10 5.2-liter FSI naturally aspirated engine offered in two states of tune: 540 HP (397 kW) and 540 Nm (398 lb-ft) in the base model and 610 HP (449 kW) and 560 Nm (413 lb-ft) in the V10 Plus model.

In terms of performance, the Audi R8 will need 3.5 seconds for the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) run before topping out at 200 mph (320 km/h) whereas the Plus mode does the sprint in 3.2 seconds and hits a maximum speed of 205 mph (330 km/h). Despite the stellar performance, the new R8 manages to provide more than decent mileage as the standard model has a fuel consumption of 11.8 liters / 100 km (19.9 mpg US or 23.9 mpg UK) with CO2 emissions of 275 g/km while the R8 V10 Plus consumes 12.4 liters / 100 km (18.9 mpg US or 22.7 mpg UK) and emits 289 g/km.

Both versions of the engine are coupled to an updated seven-speed S tronic gearbox with three automatic modes and manual control. It sends power to a permanent quattro all-wheel drive system equipped with a front electrohydraulic multi-plate clutch. In normal operation, up to 100 percent of the drive torque is sent to the rear axle and when necessary the clutch can transfer up to 100 percent of this torque to the front wheels. The rear end hosts a mechanical differential lock which should provide optimal traction on any road conditions.

The base model rides on 19-inch wheels with 245/35 front & 295/35 rear tires while 20-inch alloys with 245/30 & 305/30 tires will be optional. Stopping power comes from steel brake discs on the standard R8 and carbon fiber ceramic discs on the R8 V10 Plus which gets a standard 20-inch set.

The new Audi Space Frame combines several materials like aluminum and CFRP to enable a lightweight construction of 1,555 kg (3,428 lbs) for the R8 and 1,454 kg (3,205 lbs) for the R8 V10 Plus which makes the new model up to 50 kg (110 lbs) lighter than its predecessor. Aside from being lighter, the aluminum body's torsional rigidity has increased by approximately 40 percent. Standard on the R8 V10 Plus (optional on the standard model) are going to be the clear-coated side blades, front splitter and diffuser.

Stepping inside the cabin, there are newly developed bucket seats and a driver-oriented cockpit featuring an uncluttered design as many of the buttons and knobs have been replaced by the configurable 12.3-inch Audi virtual cockpit. Customers will have to choose between Alcantara/pearl Nappa leather and fine Nappa leather upholsteries and will be able to add clear coated carbon fiber accents. At an additional cost, a 500-watt Bang & Olufsen sound system can be added along with an Audi phone box.

The second generation Audi R8 is scheduled to go on sale this summer, with prices kicking off at €165,000 for the standard model and from €187,400 for the R8 V10 Plus.

I don't even like the interior much. The TT looks much better on the inside, more grown up and less childish.
 
So, that photo WAS the real deal then......

Ugh. I think it looks pretty bad. Far too fussy. I don't like the interior either, other than the full LCD instrument cluster. The monoposto is even more pronounced and I think it would look better if it wasn't there. It hides some of the buttons down the bottom right in front of the gear selector. The climate control buttons just hang down.

I liked the way the TT has evolved over the years. This just looks like a weird photoshop of the first generation!

Maybe I'll feel different when I see it in real life in a week.

I assume "on request" is just another way of saying "optional".
 
I think it is a mix of good things and bad things. Rear and interior (exclusing some weird details) are better resolved. The front end is a BIG no, in my opinion. The grille looks hideous. The headlights graphics are among the worst in the current Audi line up. And the profile is not better than on the current model. The character line going downwards is not my cup of tea.

I personally wouldn't say it got Q7'd, the front and profile are a very good evolution. But I'm not sure about the rear though.

Audi thoroughly researches which design will sell best (or better said, which one is the safest, because they certainly don't want to sell less than the previous car) and picks one or designs according to the results.
Apparently they decided the Q7 and R8 only needed subtle changes in order to excite existing customers and to attract new ones.
 
It looks quite nice, but nothing new and it has lost some of its "exotic-ness". The old R8 looked fantastic and fresh at launch. The interior reminds me of the Q3. The steering wheel and instrument cluster look pretty fantastic, but other than that, I find the new TT's interior much better resolved.
 
So does anyone know if there will still be a V8 R8 or will they all be V10's?

It looks like all R8 will get a V10.
