Mercedes Sticks to Diesel With New $2.9 Billion Engine Lineup
Mercedes-Benz unveiled the first in a 2.6 billion-euro ($2.9 billion) series of diesel car engines, committing to the technology’s future even as competitor Volkswagen AG is rocked by an emissions-cheating scandal centered on the fuel.
The four-cylinder motor will be available for the first time in the revamped E-Class sedan that goes on sale in March, Bernhard Heil, head of powertrain development at Mercedes parent Daimler AG, told reporters Thursday in Stuttgart, Germany. The engine offers 80 percent lower nitrogen-oxide emissions and 13 percent less fuel consumption than the previous type, Heil said.
“This new engine will define our diesel strategy for the next 10 years,” Heil said. “We believe it’ll convince the public we’ll have a bright future for diesel.”
Volkswagen’s admission to rigging software in diesel engines to cheat on emissions tests has called the technology’s future into question. The deception added to concerns in municipalities such as Paris that exhaust from the fuel is a major contributor to smog. More than half of passenger vehicles in the European Union are equipped with diesel engines, which emit less carbon dioxide than gasoline versions -- helping carmakers meet tough CO2 limits on fleets -- and consume fuel more efficiently.

Mercedes plans to roll out the new diesel motors across its model range through 2019, after starting work on the project about four years ago. The engines will comply with new EU standards on testing vehicles for emissions and consumption that take real-world driving into account.
The German luxury-car manufacturer is betting that conventional powering systems will dominate the auto market for awhile, even as the industry takes steps to add all-electric vehicles. General Motors Co. said Thursday that its Opel division will bring out its first solely battery-powered car in 2017. Daimler’s electric offerings now include battery-powered versions of the Mercedes B-Class hatchback and two-seat Smart city car.
“Spending on the improvement of existing diesel engines brings a much greater cost-benefit efficiency than spending on electrification,” Heil said. “That said, electrification is key to our powertrain strategy despite the cost.”

The previous W212 E63 AMG was first shown at the 2009 New York Motorshow held in Apr 2009, one month after the previous W212 debuted. It could possibly be shown at Geneva 2016 but could be delayed till Sep 2016 Paris show (most likely debut of the T-wagon).
So the T-wagon is still over 7 months away? The paris motor show is in october by the way. I wonder when the first deliveries will be then. Volvo V90 will be show next week (official pictures already leaked)
After test drive of the sedan, i will see if it's worth waiting the T-wagon. I thought they were going to release it in summer...

It could well be New York again. The 2016 show opens March 25th (to the public). Paris seems a long way off (1st Oct) based on the spy photos.

Now if you can get the E-Class to pull up to you from a crowded parking lot while you are standing
outside a grocery store from the phone gesture that would be the kicker of the year and a real show stopper, especially in a rainy situation.

2017 Mercedes-AMG E63 returns in new spy photos
Mercedes recently introduced the new E Class at the North American International Auto Show so the company is turning its attention to the high-performance E63 variant.
Caught undergoing testing in Spain, the high-performance model features a familiar design but is distinguished by a sportier front fascia with larger air intakes and a single bar grille. Moving further back, we can see aggressive side skirts, a high-performance braking system, a rear spoiler, and a four-tailpipe sports exhaust system.
The interior will largely carryover from the standard model so customers can expect to see a digital instrument cluster and a widescreen infotainment system with 12.3-inch displays. The model is slated to have a sport steering wheel, revised trim, and an assortment of new options including a Burmester 3D surround sound system.
Mercedes has been tight-lipped about performance specifications but the E63 is expected to use an upgraded version of the biturbo 4.0-liter V8 engine that resides in the C63 andGT. The engine produces 503 horsepower in the Mercedes-AMG GT S but rumors have suggested the E63 could have approximately 550 hp. Regardless of the final number, the model is expected to be offered with an optional all-wheel drive system.
