E-Class W213 [First drives] Mercedes-Benz E-Class (W213)


The W213 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is the fifth generation of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, sold from 2016 as a 2017 model. It succeeded the W212/S212 E-Class models. The coupe/convertible models share the same platform as the sedan/wagon, in contrast to the previous generation. The high-performance Mercedes-AMG E63 and E63S versions of the W213 have been available as well from 2016 (as a 2017 model), and these are the only versions with V8 engines.

A lot of that is just marketing fluff and simply not true. C&D just tested the E300 and their lows stated it perfectly:

"Turbo four is slower than the previous V-6; has lost some of that old-school sense of substance."


Going from a V6 to an I4 is not an upgrade by any means and that value enhancement is just hogwash. The made the car cheaper both in build and under the hood and now to get it loaded it is nearly 70K, far beyond the old E350. Don't get me wrong it's a fine car, but it isn't perfect and the loss of some of that old Mercedes feeling is most troubling.

I agree with the marketing fluff, but the new E is cheaper to build because it's lighter?

I cannot disagree with everything you posted because I have not seen it.

Car&Driver seems to like the E and the I4 saying it suits the E quite well.

Lows:
Looks like every other Mercedes, infotainment controls can be fiddly, no six-cylinder option.
The E-class comes exclusively in four-cylinder E300 guise. This is worthy of discussion only because most competitors offer optional six-cylinder engines without forcing buyers to step into AMG equivalents. Ultimately, customers will vote with their wallets on whether a vehicle capable of being optioned to more than $75,000 needs more cylinders, but the low-key engine is appropriately matched to the rest of the E’s dynamic capabilities, even when mated to the 4MATIC drive system like the cars we drove for most of our time in California. The turbocharged 2.0-liter’s 241 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque are on par with the entry-level engines in BMW’s 5-series, Audi’s A6, and others, and it contends with an E-class that’s about 150 pounds lighter than before, so acceleration is uneventful but not terribly slow. The engine is almost diesel-like, with the nine-speed automatic transmission doing a fine job of firing off snappy shifts and selecting the right gear to take advantage of the low-down torque. With this sort of power, the 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system goes unnoticed, not affecting performance in any way besides contributing traction, and then only in the slipperiest conditions. It adds about 140 pounds to the curb weight and $2500 to the price.

The powertrain’s only vices are the faintest hints of four-cylinder booming in certain low-rpm, high-gear situations (entering a slight grade on the highway, for example) and the transmission’s insistence on passing through fifth gear during full-throttle downshifts. Floor the gas pedal while at a cruise, and the transmission will drop from seventh, eighth, or ninth gear all the way to third—but not before briefly hanging up at fifth. We fully expect that 99 percent of E-class buyers won’t notice or care, even if the foible adds a short delay to red-mist passing maneuvers, as does the mass of the 4MATIC all-wheel-drive hardware.

What will be noticed is the cohesion between the E300’s stylish, rich interior; the quiet, coddling comfort as it goes down the road; and the fatigue-combating semi-autonomous features. Every aspect of the E-class is working toward a singular, overtly luxurious experience. Even the practical stuff isn’t overlooked, with plenty of stash space in the cabin and a usefully shaped trunk that can be expanded by way of the standard 40/20/40 split-folding rear seat. Back-seat passengers have plenty of headroom and greater legroom than before, thanks to the ’17 E300’s 2.5-inch-longer wheelbase, and a quartet of air vents centered on the dashboard (in addition to outboard vents) allows each front passenger to thoroughly air themselves, while still directing A/C to the back seats to support the dedicated duo of vents back there. Everything feels well thought out and pragmatic, an entirely predictable result given Benz’s record of experience in building fine sedans. Sporty sedans may be the latest fad, but the E-class, now in its 10th generation, caps a lineage dating back to 1953, and it is comfortable being an unabashedly un-sporty luxury sedan.

Suiting it is just ok, it isn't outstanding. It is slower than the car is replaced and the I4 doesn't match the refinement of the V6. That is the point. A V6 option should have been presented from the start and the loss of most of that traditional MB feeling is a much bigger problem than the engines. The new I6s will resolve all this.

Oh yeah, maby MB believes the upcoming I6 is more suited to the new E for the US
than the previous V6, shame we have to wait for it.

As good as the previous V6 was, I didn`t really think it was all that.
The new I6 will dazzle in the new car, no doubt about it.

IMO the I4 is just as smooth at idle as the V6, the only thing against it is the engine sound.

But it sounds like a tractor engine and once moving it can't match the V6's refinement and mind you the old 3.5L V6 was not the best either.

So where is this E55 going to fit in?

Is it going to use a highly tuned I6? Or a detuned V8?

E43 and E55 are rumored to be i6's with different states of tune. I doubt you will see all three selling in the same markets.
 
I reckon it will replace the E43 as it will be a perfect split in power (probably will have about 476PS (350kw)) between the upcoming more powerful inline 6 E400 (which will probably be increased to same power as C43, 367PS (270kw)) and the 571PS (420kw) E63.
