hi i drove my friends 750i and he had HUD on his car we drove at night...its nice but i dont know if its really a neccasity ,,its more like a cool thing feautre then anything alyhough we drove 300 kms it was a bit off a piss off at times....I asked him if he likes it he said it was fun when he bought the car as a novelty now he says he feels he wasted his money should have rather put some other extra...I am shure MB will have something simlar or something soon but the thing is with these extras they cost so so so much here in SA and when you sell the car you get nothing back..

Back to the S calss i would like to see more pics cant wait...

You mean he should have saved for an S class ? :D

Come on, if you don't like it, press a button and it is gone. I find it useful specially in a powerfull car since you can easily gain speed without knowing and losing your licence . new ones has Navi directions, rev counter in M cars and more to come ..

^Whats your point?
I rather have massage seats in 6m long luxury car.. than ****** HUD..

If you want the HUD rather your not a buyer of this class..or plain retarded!!!

Massage in a car is one the stupiest things to have in a car. Besides It doenst work good either. Talk about worthless extra option. Carmakers offer many unnecessary things and HUD isnt the only unnecessary thing today.

^that i can agree with..
Its useless..like many other things..
But massage seats fits a shit load better in this class of vehicle than freaking HUD..its not a M3 we are dealing with her..

Bmw fans think your supposed to drive like RALPH Schumacher (;)) whever you go.. no matter if you have a 745li or a 118i ..

I don't know what's the big deal with HUD, it's a very old option found on many cars like chevrolets and now BMWs. Mercedes didn't want to implemt it on their cars for a specific reason that we don't know. Maybe they will use it on the new S or they will invent something more advanced like they usually do. It's the S afterall and not any normal car. Let's wait and see.

Upfront, I'd like to say that I haven't had the privilege of using HUD. But I see the safety merits of using HUD. If the pertinent information are displayed on the windshield in minimally distracting manner, then my eyes spend more time on the road, thus more aware of my surrounding. Usually, by my own estimations, I spend anywhere from 0.5-2 seconds looking at the gauges every 30-40 seconds (I have an old car, and the fuel gauge isn't the most reliable). Now this isn't alot of time but if I were driving some where that's densely packed or barreling along on the Autobahn, I'd imagine HUD would be great safety feature to have, especially if I have to react to something where every second counts.

^ a HUD update ;)

Audi and BMW use head-up displays but Daimler does not – why?

“We have tested them but we get mixed reactions from customers regarding what you see – I have problems with it too. Because I see numbers and I see the road and I’m constantly trying to focus my eyes on one or the other. We’ve prepared our vehicles to accept the technology but we have not yet got a clear understanding whether customers will want it."

Hmmm, did not realize Audi uses HUD. The only ones I was aware of were BMW, Corvette, and recently, Lexus.

I think, like with any novel tech, there's a learning curve that's involved before one gets comfortable with it. Some things take a fraction of asecond while other features take a few days or even weeks. If it's well-designed and well-integrated, then better the gadget.

I do agree with hoffmeister, if it isn't disracting it is actually a very safe option.
And the article is from May last year, Mercs vision about HUD could have changed.

P.S. What does the HUD actually show apart from speed?

Screw HUD. :D

Wow.. I thought all Merc fans would embrace new technologies, especially those that add to safety and help make you a better, more alert driver. ;)

I miss it when I drive my E-Class... I love it when I drive my 6er... I'd be disappointed if Daimler looks the other way and doesn't include this at least as an option in their new S-Class.. I heard this has been one of the most requested options from new BMW buyers, so they'd be losing a lot of $$$ by not adding it... and that Daimler's marketing excuse in post 96 above does not convince me as the real truth behind why Mercedes is lacking this... Are my expectations of this brand beginning to exceed reality?

Having digital numbers in my face I'd assume may be more of a distraction than anything. I just don't feel one way or another about it. Personally, I could care less if M-B implements it, but I wouldn't turn it down.

Those digital numbers isnt in your face K-A :) You exaggerate ;) I have used HUD when I drive M5 but truth to be told I wouldnt choose if I had to pay for it. Things like massage in the seats and HUD isnt my thing. But this coming from a person who didnt like it when manual gearboxes started to have 6 gears :D

Anyway, its just a matter of time before MB offers it as an option. There are always people prepared to pay for it, even MB drivers ;)

PS HUD: The height of the display can be adjusted.

Question.

Let's say you're driving along, and your eyes see neither the HUD nor the conventional speedo. Do you actually save time looking 6 inches higher at the HUD? Either way you're still going to need to break focus and then regain it, no ? Wouldn't that take the same amount of time as well ?

I found an article from year 2007 about HUD advantage/disadvantage:

Head-up Display Advantages

1. Shows you all kind of information that you usually had to look on different dials and can group them all in one place for better functionality. Those HUDs you can see on the market these days, have Bluetooth, GPS and everything that a drive would need to get in time and on the right track to the destination.

2. Data is projected so that they won’t distract the driver’s attention like cellphones or dashboard controls do.

3. Eyes refocus much faster when you switch from the road to the projected display that usually floats 15 feet in front of you

4. Prices are not outrageous as one may think. For a few hundreds you can buy a head-up display that might offer you a safer car.

5. Nowadays HUDs are not really big but they cannot be easily implemented in one’s car with all the controls you need therefore more development is needed.

Head-up Display Disadvantages

1. Such devices will evolve very soon into some kind of portable multimedia that will be able to read your email while driving. Though seeing an email directly on the windshield is safer than using your PDA or your smartphone, it’s still a big distraction.

2. Voice or flashing text could also be distracting for someone driving, because you may want to focus on what the person says or on what the flashing is about.

3. Expect cars to have HUDs installed from 2008 onwards which is at least one year from today. Many of us are anxious to see it running right now, not waiting 1-2 years to get it as a standard on a new car.

4. The optical system that projects your data is complicated and therefore the light efficiency is low. I really wonder how they adjust the HUD projector to be as light in clear sun as when we’re night driving.

--------

If HUD is a safety issue it wouldnt be for sale, pretty simple right? Even cheap japanese cars have HUD as an extra option. Whats more dangerous than HUD is paying atttention to you extern attached navigator and listening to a man's annoying voice. ;)

That doesn't make much sense. Typical HUDs collimates the projected image, which makes the brain perceive it as it is at optical infinity, so your eyes don't have to refocus between the outside world and the projected image. That is the whole point of a HUD vs just plainly projecting stuff.

I haven't driven a HUD equipped car, but I have shot rifles with reflex sights which use the same theory - and never had to refocus between the target and the red dot - which of course would defeat the purpose of the sight.
