The point is, Rix at least gets sent to drive and write much more than Brownlee and is exposed to the other journos so there's a chance he might still develop his craft. And occasionally he gets to write the type of stuff that isn't heavy on driving, where such expertise doesn't need to come into play.
On the other hand, he never did show any signs of growing the balls to be critical. He just parrots press releases without much critical thought.
I don't care about MKBHD's tech reviewing credentials. That has nothing to do with cars and driving. He is the better presenter, but I've never actually seen him produce anything that I would consider a proper magazine article, therefore I don't consider him a writer.
His focus is a consumer electronics and therefore, for me, who considers cars to be more than just products, he's a low-level life form, for all intents and purposes.
He absolutely is a newcomer in the space. His oldest video on his dedicated car channel is one year old. On his main channel, he drove some supercars around LA 5 years ago. His passion as a teenager was never cars, it was telephones!
The fact that it took cars becoming tech-y, interchangeable and lame for him to finally take notice, tells you all you need to know.
His only potential redeeming quality is the fact that his income isn't reliant on cars and so he could maybe poke the bear without having to worry about the wrath of the industry. But then again he's the least qualified person to do so. And I don't mean just shitting on Fisker Ocean. I'm talking about established players.
His Hard Drive segment in TG magazine is an absolute waste of two pages every single time. You could get the same quality writing if you hired a random guy from Bangladesh on fiverr.com
I find it funny how they need to plaster his face on it as if a disclaimer that: sorry, what you're about to read is mindless trash written by an e-celeb.
Look what you made me do. I can't believe I'd have to defend Jack Rix, lol.
CH's step back from the spotlight is sad to see. Seems like he almost enjoys losing influence, which is very strange to me.
BTW, I'd like to give shoutout to Ollie Kew, who does seem to push back on manufacturers' marketing bs occasionally. Maybe he's the chosen one to deliver us from evil, so to speak
