BMW M vs MB AMG (posts moved from other threads)

On the other hand, half of the M line-up now consists of "sport activity vehicles" with no upper-end to balance it out.

M2, M3, M4, M4 Convertible, M5, M6, M6 Gran Coupe, M6 convertible = 8 models
X5M, X6M = 2 models

80% of the M line-up are not SAV's

Anyway, for "Balance"... no doubt Mercedes has whored out the AMG badge as much as BMW has with the M-Badge.

AMG Van-Klasse.

LOL, maybe this thread is a good example about how biased some comments about the forum being full of MB trolls are. The other day I read a mod agreeing with that and I found it to be quite worrying. It is absolutely true there are some guys on the MB front that do nothing for the place. But to me it is clear we have two sides of the same coin here.

Which makes this place quite boring some times, to be honest.

M power, there is nothing greater.

Why can't ppl understand, unless its porsche 918 then.. there is something greater.

But up until that, its only M

Both BMW and MB are milking their performance badges to the maximum, AMG Van posted above is just horrid for the performance sub brand reputation IMO. Rather than AMG package, they should have given it the AMG look and called it a V class Sports. Why both MB and BMW, after going so downmarket with their names, are also doing the same to their high performance sub brands. How many AMG branded Vans are sold? Are the numbers big enough to downgrade the brand like this?

However, MB with AMG is also giving the market exclusive cars like the SLS, GT and the upcoming hypercar. BMW needs a M1. It was the original M1 that made the M badge so desirable in the first place.

It used to be naturally aspirated, light weight, and RWD. Not turbos, AWD and a pig of a SUV.

What I find really interesting is that BMW won't build an M7, but they'll build M SUVs.

M

I would not write off the M760Li yet. Apparently its phenomenal, some who are familiar with the car state its the best V12 in its class.

The AMG badge is milked by Mercedes.

Every model, except for the b class has an AMG variant, even a transversely mounted 2.0 little hatch haha!

Both M and AMG have since given up on many of their bedrock philosophies...

As Merc1 stated, M is slathered on SUV's and no longer emphasize naturally aspirated engines, but with emissions standards being what they are, who is? Regarding AWD, thus far only the SUV's have that. And M has taken efforts to make their cars lighter, but when the donor car is heavy as it is, you can only do so much before it becomes cost-probitive.

Now AMG... Well, that whole "one engine, one man" creed went out the window once the E43 and C43 officially became AMGs, and not AMG Sport. As impressed as I am with the E43, I would say it's bit less special than your other AMG's with bespoke 4.0L V8's.

Call it get older, you realize all these "philosophies" and "principles" really is a bunch of marketing malarkey. Any profit-seeking entity out there trying to make an extra buck will do what it takes to get it. And if it means leaning extra hard on a sub-brand to sell a buyer some lifestyle or whatever to get it, then it's all fair game. And that's because the number who wants that extra special badge far exceeds those who care about philosphies, history or whatever.

Both BMW M and AMG would have been foolish to ignore demand for Performance SUVs. As it was the market that determined this course of action and still does. Both AMG and M can attest to no more dogmas.
Mercedes offers a performance SUV (or soon will on every SUV line).
BMW will offer similar soon enough.
But what is surprising is Mercedes lack of ambition in key European tax heavy markets where high performance SUVs are penalised?
This led BMW to introduce the X5 and X6 M50d offering high performance, greater efficiency to open a niche for BMW with less tax penalty for customers who wanted a performance SUV.
