Road Test - Bugatti Veyron Super Sport
Put simply, the Veyron Super Sport is no less than the fastest car we’ve tested. By a very long way indeed. But the Super Sport still obliterated our record books. And the number to end all numbers, as far as we’re concerned, was the time it took to go from zero to 100mph. Admittedly, the Super Sport is aided by a brilliantly effective launch control system, four-wheel drive, 1183bhp and a very fast-shifting dual-clutch gearbox, but the knowledge that, in one direction, it did 0-100mph in 4.94sec remains a fact that few of us can quite comprehend. The two-way average was 5.0sec dead; the previous fastest time we’d recorded was the McLaren F1’s 6.3sec.
But what’s most amazing about the Super Sport’s wild performance is that it is seemingly never-ending. Even at 150mph there is still a huge thump of acceleration available, and that makes it unique in our experience. What we are talking about is the ability to accelerate from 110-130mph in just 1.9sec (in fourth), or from 30-70mph in 1.7sec, or from 180-200mph in a mere 6.0sec.
Yet the lack of drama you experience from behind the wheel makes the sensation seem even more surreal than it sounds. You are never less than aware of being inside an object that is hurtling towards the horizon, because your entire body is pressed hard into the seat under full acceleration – at 1.2g from a standing start, which is roughly what most cars can manage during an emergency stop. But the feeling of supreme refinement is such that the thrust seems twice as startling as it might be if the car had a rock-hard ride and a screaming exhaust.
Despite weighing nearly two tonnes, the Super Sport acquitted itself well under braking, with lovely feel through the pedal and a reasonably competitive 70mph to zero distance of just 45.2 metres.
