E-Class (W213) [Spyshots] 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class (W213)

The W213 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is the fifth generation of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, sold from 2016 as a 2017 model. It succeeded the W212/S212 E-Class models. The coupe/convertible models share the same platform as the sedan/wagon, in contrast to the previous generation. The high-performance Mercedes-AMG E63 and E63S versions of the W213 have been available as well from 2016 (as a 2017 model), and these are the only versions with V8 engines.

What would interest me is the size of the fueltank. The W212 can be ordered with a 80 ltrs fueltank. I hope this will be the case with the W213 as well. Fuel economy is getting better with each new model, I'd like however MB to hang on to a proper size of fueltank (minimum 80 ltrs). If you're annual mileage is rather high, you love it when you don't have to drive every 2nd or 3rd day to the gass station.

re the long post above. I have hard time seeing what is different from todays distronic with steer assist?

The proportions of the new E look great. In fact from a proportions perspective, I think it rivals the current 5-Series F10 which IMO is still one of the best balanced sedan-designs ever.

It sounds eerily similar to Tesla's AutoPilot system:

W211 also had great proportions very similar to the W213.

I always love the E-Class, hope than MB would not load up too much tech to the car. It may affect the quality and increase up keep cost. I like my W212 solid yet stylish :)

The top-of-the-line S-Class already on the market isn’t quite as smart as Daimler says the new E-Class will be. Still, it can take over in stop-and-go traffic as fast as 60 kilometers per hour and prevent a lane change when another vehicle is in its blind spot. The options are popular: More than 90 percent of S-Class buyers in Germany add the 2,250 euro package, Daimler said.

In addition to making highway driving simpler, the new E-Class’s automated systems are designed to help prevent crashes. In a simulation of a sudden highway traffic jam at Daimler’s test site, the car screeched to a halt inches away from a dummy after hurtling toward it at 90 kilometers per hour.

Several automotive generations into the future, the steering wheel might become optional. Daimler’s F015 luxury concept car, shown in January, had swivel seats so driver and passengers could face each other for a chat. How quickly this vision becomes reality depends on how quickly carmakers, legislators and insurers can find legal answers to the question of who’s responsible in a crash and solve the moral riddle of how to tell a car what to hit in an unavoidable collision.

More technology to be launched in the new e to counter the slight competition from the 7 series.

Here's the latest diesel info. Hopefully the optional larger tank will be retained. :)

The next Mercedes-Benz E-Class is due to arrive in mid 2016

2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class spotted testing - engines and launch date
by Greg Kable

The next-generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class saloon has been spotted testing ahead of a planned debut at the Detroit motor show in January next year.

The new-generation model, codenamed W213, adopts Mercedes’ modular MRA platform, as used by the latest C-Class and S-Class models.

Insiders confirm the new E-Class will once again grow in size, to about 4950mm long and 1940mm wide. An estate, offering a similar 695-litre luggage capacity to its predecessor, is due to go on sale towards the end of 2016. The increased use of high-strength steel and aluminium is claimed to make both versions up to 100kg lighter than today’s.

Stylistically, the new E-Class follows the latest C-Class, the GLA, and the S-Class coupé. As on other recent models, Mercedes plans two distinct front-end treatments: a traditional chrome grille and a more sporting blade grille. Sources suggest the aerodynamics have been refined so that the drag coefficient has improved from 0.25 to a class-leading 0.23.

The interior gets a 150mm-tall, 700mm-wide monitor boasting HD graphics and, via a stereo camera mounted within the windscreen, support for augmented reality functions. Mercedes also plans an improved head-up display and new multi-function steering wheel controls.

The new E-Class will be launched in the UK during the second quarter of next year. It will have a new generation of four-cylinder diesel engines, codenamed OM654, alongside existing four-cylinder petrol engines. The new 2.0-litre diesel is expected to be offered in two states of tune.

Mercedes will extend the line-up during 2016 with a new generation of 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesels. New six-pot petrol engines are also planned.

The new in-line six-cylinder direct-injection petrol engine (codenamed M256) and common-rail diesel engine (codenamed OM656) are undergoing pilot production at the company’s factory in Unterturkheim, near Stuttgart in Germany.

They share elements of their architecture with Mercedes-Benz’s existing in-line four-cylinder petrol engine, the M274, including their 90mm bore centre spacing and 500cc individual cylinder volume.

All three units form part of a new modular engine family that, sources say, also includes an in-line three-cylinder petrol engine and a new-generation in-line four-cylinder diesel (codenamed OM654).

The three-cylinder petrol engine is scheduled to be offered in future generations of the A-Class, B-Class, CLA, GLA and possibly other front-wheel-drive models in combination with an electric motor.

The new four-cylinder diesel, which replaces the OM651 unit in use today, gains the latest in piezo-guided direct injection. It is planned to be used across the Mercedes line-up in models ranging from the A-Class to the S-Class. Both engines are considered crucial to the German car maker’s efforts to meet the 95g/km fleet average CO2 emissions regulation due to come into force in 2020.

An E350e plug-in hybrid, with a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine and an electric motor, will join the range within a year of launch. It’s said to have an electric-only range of 20 miles.

Later next year, a new E63 will crown the line-up. It is set to get a reworked version of AMG’s twin-turbo 5.5-litre V8 in two states of tune. All engines, save for the AMG V8, will come with Mercedes’ 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic gearbox as standard. Alongside standard rear-wheel drive, selected engines will be offered with optional four-wheel drive.

The E-Class rides on newly developed suspension that features variable-rate damping. Revised AirMatic air suspension will be standard on higher-level models. The new E-Class is due to receive the latest in autonomous driving technology. Nothing is confirmed, but officials hint that it will offer a function that will allow it to autonomously accelerate, brake, change lanes and overtake up to a pre-determined speed. High-end options will include a full range of self-parking functions.

Wow... 1.94 m width - that's even wider than the S-Class - seems almost prohibitive in dense urban environments...

^ Here's a translation of MB Passion's last E-Class article from a few days ago. MB might decide to preview the E with some kind of concept at the IAA. But that's only a rumor so far. :)

View of W213 E-Class Prototype with Camouflaged Interior
The new E-Class sedan will premiere at NAIAS in January 2016 in Detroit, judging by the currently spotted cautious and well camouflaged prototypes. At the IAA 2015 in Frankfurt the E-Class sedan will not be available.

Recent photos of the E-Class 213 series prototypes show little new, even if you can already see the front a little better now. The 4-eyed-face of the E-Class continues in the series, but is now grouped under a glass. The 55 mm longer cars of the E-Class has shorter overhangs on a longer wheelbase, the optics adheres partly to the C-Class and S-Class. Wheels up to 20" will be offered.

The interior of the E-Class receives two large 12.3 inch screens, and 3 different display designs can be freely selected. Below the righthand display are four round nozzles on the center console, like in the current S-Class, and a new, flatter touchpad without rotary pushbutton.

That low drag coefficient is absolutely amazing :-). What do you think @Wolfgang, will we see the revised airmatic and HUD on the W222 mopf/fl?
PS I think this new E-klasse is going to be a major leap forward.
