E-Class W213 [Spyshots] 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class (W213)

The W213 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is the fifth generation of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, sold from 2016 as a 2017 model. It succeeded the W212/S212 E-Class models. The coupe/convertible models share the same platform as the sedan/wagon, in contrast to the previous generation. The high-performance Mercedes-AMG E63 and E63S versions of the W213 have been available as well from 2016 (as a 2017 model), and these are the only versions with V8 engines.
Even if it arrives, Maybach E will almost certainly be sold in China only, just like the LWB E Class. 400 (V6) and 500 (V8) are probably the only engines it will have.
Maybe the Maybach E-class will only be sold in China on the LWB or ELWB (unique) platform, but then it questions if someone will buy a Maybach E-class why don't they just get a regular S-class cause it will probably be the same size and maybe price as well!

Next E 63 AMG may be AWD-only

New architecture for Merc's next E-Class spells green light for AWD RHD E 63 AMG. Will rear-wheel drive survive?

The next-generation Mercedes-AMG E 63 sports sedan and its close relation, the CLS 63, will not only downsize from a 5.5 to a 4.0-litre biturbo V8 engine but could also abandon rear-wheel drive completely for all-wheel drive, including in Australia and other right-hand drive markets.

The boss of Mercedes-Benz’s increasingly popular hot-shop, Tobias Moers, confirmed the potential all-paw conversion to motoring.com.au at the launch of the new C 63 in Portugal overnight (Australian time).

Benz’s 4MATIC AWD system became available on left-hand drive E and CLS 63s in 2013, but could not be fitted to right-hand drive versions for technical reasons.

The change comes about thanks to the highly versatile new MRA architecture, which will eventually underpin most mainstream models from the new W205 C-Class and above, including the next-generation E-Class due in 2016, the MkIII CLS that follows it and a slew of SUVs such as the GLC, GLE (formerly ML) and GLE Coupe.

“The future architecture is feasible for right-hand drive and all-wheel drive,” Moers confirmed.

“We consider that (RHD-AWD) yes. It’s not finally done but we consider that. We need a little more time to do the final decision but we have taken that into consideration.”

And when pressed, he confirmed that the consideration extended to dropping rear-wheel drive from the E-Class and CLS AMG models altogether.

“We are in discussion about that. That’s open.”

If AMG did go down that path, it would likely be leading BMW M in the same direction, as new boss Frank van Meel (an ex-Audi quattro GmbH boss) hinted earlier this year that the next M5 and M6 could be drive all four wheels.

Moers said it was important the 4MATIC tune in an AMG fitted the company’s driving style: “If we can manage it then we have a nice all-wheel drive system in the car which provides a nice drifting behaviour. Then it’s OK."

Having AWD as standard in the E and CLS AMGs will be appealing to Benz considering power levels are expected to rise from today’s 430 to 450kW or higher with the swap from the M157 to the M177 engine, even though it will drop 1.5 litres in capacity.

The M177, which powers the C 63, will also find its way into a variety of AMG ‘63’ SUV models. The dry-sump M178 version powers the GT coupe and currently tops out at 375kW and 700Nm.

“It’s a really capable engine. It is not in a big stress level now with 375kW,” Moers said. “The technology in that engine is really great and there is lot more room for more horsepower and more torque.”

AWD has also proved immensely popular. In Germany, AWD versions of the E 63 and CLS claim 95 per cent of the sales volume, with RWDs accounting for just five per cent.

“The success of the all-wheel drive on the left-hand markets is tremendous,” Moers said.

There’s another factor too – in AMG’s testing the AWD versions have lapped faster than the RWD equivalents, fitting with the brand’s ‘driving performance’ ethos.

“We are faster around the racetrack even with that car (AWD),” added Moers.

Moers revealed the new W205 C-Class could also have been offered with the option of AWD, but AMG elected to stick with RWD because of the car’s character.

“We took the decision to have the rear-wheel drive car in the market because this is a kind of a bad-ass car and we want to go for that,” Moers said.

However, the twin-turbo V6-powered C 450 AMG Sport, which is confirmed to arrive Down Under early next year will be Australia's first all-wheel drive C-Class and the first W205 C-Class offered with a six-cylinder here.

The next E-Class and all its variants are the most important cars from my point of view. It will be time to buy something at that point to replace my daily driver. I really hope they get this right. S and C says they will, but as always I still worry.

Yeah. You're right that the new e class is one of the most important if not the most important model yet to be launched by Mercedes. The next GLE after the yet to be launched gle will be the model that will enable Daimler to regain the suv market share in china and the rest of the world

Great news if this is a real success.
All those drag races in the UK and Australia on youtube with underpowered RWD E63 version
against the competition should come to a close.

I think it's safe not keep the expectations too hight because the car is going to look more like a C and S super imposed which may not really satisfy everyone's liking as the previous E's always had a unique design to differentiate it significantly from the C's and the S's

MB has never had to rethink the E class. Yes, past models have had their issues but on the whole, I would say this is the one model that MB has gotten right, generation after generation. It's the bread, the butta, the thanksgiving turkey. It will be evolutionary, unsurprising, and will probably sell incredibly well on those merits alone.

AMG boss hints at AMG Sport variants of the CLA- & E-Class

Mercedes-AMG boss Tobias Moers has confirmed the company will offer a plethora of new AMG Sport variants.

In an interview with Motoring, Moers said AMG Sport variants will play an "important part" in their future in terms of business and volume.

While Mercedes has already unveiled the C450and GLE 450 AMG Sport, Moers confirmed there will also be AMG Sport variants of models based on the MFA platform. This likely means we can expect A- and CLA-Class AMG Sport models.

The executive also hinted at a new E-Class AMG Sport model. It would presumably use a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 engine that produces 367 PS (270 kW) and 520 Nm (383 lb-ft) of torque.

Yes a CLA300 Sport would be nice, 265-275hp. The replacement for the E400 should be the next generation E450 with an 375hp I6. THAT would be the E I would want.

Good look at the next E. Everything on that road was a Mercedes-Benz product, from the little A-Class hatch that passed by to the garbage truck.

WOW it can be seen in the frame an Imposing (to say the least) radiator grille, I mean that is really oversized....other than that I can't wait to see the new E, because it would be superb to see a more softer and organically designed E compared to the current one, I think this will follow more closely in the footsteps of the sleek W211, and judging from the new C which is top notch, the new E would need to meet more higher expectations. The E is always the matter of the perfect balancing act.

From the cars in the video the overall look of the new E-class is similar to S-class and C-class, big grill and almost the same shape back lights. I hope when the final details revealed it wont be a copy paste of both, cause then we could be in for some disappointment.

Agree. When I see these spy pics I think these renders might be a good indication about where the design is going:

This is very so-so IMO. So bland and standard people are going to think it has debuted old already.

And yes, MB need to start differentiating their desings more. You can´t just have one exterior design for the sedans, one for the coupes, and same interior on each size regardless if it´s a SUV, a sedan or a coupe.

Yes I agree with you totally the way its going it will look similar to those renders, which is a disappointment cause we are hoping for the E-class to at least be different to the C-class and S-class in some way that it doesn't look like a copy of another family member. It will get real confusing trying to identify which car is which from the back if it uses the same back light design. They could maybe make the back lights slightly different shape and front lights as well. In some ways that's why i liked the W211 and W212 E-classes cause they looked different to the C-class and S-class of their perspective time periods but still had some kind of family resemblance.
