Robert Lesnik seems to be Mercedes new darling designer. If he is indeed responsible for the S-coupe (CL) then he has had a major impact in his short time there from the S-class to the GLA and now the S-coupe.

It makes me wonder what is happening with Mark Fetherston? o_O (designer of the A Class, SLS, and first gen B Class).

Mark was responsible for the CLA and it was a bit let down. The car will sell in huge numbers but design wise not up to the mark

While one can accuse the various M-B designers of committing the occasional "fauxpas" over the years, M-B always seems to get it "right" with their large coupes. There is not one post WWII model that hasn't captured my fascination. They are the embodiment of M-Bs' interpretation of elegant oppulence.

"Darling" is the right term here. The Mercedes Design team consists of 400 people. Designers, modelers and engineers. It's really not fair to present Robert Lesnik as the one and only designer. I don't get why they always publish a sketch with his signature when he wasn't the main designer of the car. It's like Wolfgang Egger's ugly sketches of every new Audi model, as if he designed any of them. He is the chief of exterior design at MB. these people don't have time to work as designers. their job is more to manage everything in their department. The designers are the one who should be mentioned, since they are doing the real work!!
The S class was designed by Il-Hun Yoon
The GLA was designed by Ulrich Bauer
The S coupe was designed by Gerhard Stolz

So A and CLA by Mark Fetherston and GLA by Ulrich Bauer. No wonder GLA is bit more expressive and flamboyant compared to other two.

This is why design is purely subjective. Of the three cars, my eyes seem to think that the A is the most resolved design. I guess if the A was a Subaru Impreza wagon the GLA would be the XV Crosstrek

Robert Lesnik designed the s-class. I read an interview of his where he stated that when he arrived at Mercedes there were 3 design proposals in clay for the S. Wagoner was not entirely happy with any of them so Lesnik begged him to let him come up with a proposal on one half of one of the clay models. Wagoner gave him 1 week. Lesnik says he had been dreaming of designing an S class since he was a child so he knew exactly what to do. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Il Hun Yoon was probably involved in the refinement of the design.

MB Passion might have more pics as early as Monday. :)

Mercedes-Benz has just released the first teaser for the new S-Class Coupe Concept - pictures of the concept cars we bring on Tuesday morning - and with luck on Monday after the Media Night 2013 from Mercedes-Benz in Frankfurt.

The colleagues from 5.6 incidentally also report on the new S-Class Coupe Concept. The production model can be ordered in January 2014, and will be rolled out as early as March 2014 - probably - to customers (internal code C217). Translated from MB Passion

I though they are going to launch the S Coupe at Frankfurt. Looks like it is only the concept study and we shall wait more to see see the production version.

No problem for me,according to GLA concept and GLA production version format,S coupe production version will be 99% identical to the concept.

So it seems like it is going to be called S-Coupé and not CL. That is a good thing, it allows Mercedes to add some consitency with the C-Coupé and a true next generation E-Coupé rivaling the 6 Series.

But CLA reminds me that things can go in the opposite direction as well.
They are the same to me,except for a few decorations. In fact CLA even looks better without the bling bling effect.I think why people think concept always better is because the extraordinary exterior color plays a big role on visual effect.
