Fortwo/Forfour New Smart ForFour - Latest Spy Pics

The Smart Fortwo (stylized as "smart fortwo") is a two-seater city car manufactured and marketed by the Smart division of the Mercedes-Benz Group for model years 1998–2024, across three generations - each using a rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and a one-box design. The Smart Forfour (stylized as "smart forfour") is a city car (A-segment) marketed by Smart over two generations. The first generation was marketed in Europe from 2004 to 2006 with a front-engine configuration, sharing its platform with the Mitsubishi Colt.

Daimler is said to be planning a comprehensive cooperation with Renault again according to rumors published by Manager Magazin. Daimler did not comment, though, and so far it's not finalised.

It would include a new forfour and also a new fortwo. Three cylinder engines for the A-/B-Class might also be planned.

Renault and Mercedes unite to develop small car platform

Posted on: November 30th, 2009 by editor

Renault and Mercedes-Benz are teaming up to develop a modern small car platform and two engine models which will serve as the foundation for a new series of Renault city cars and Smart vehicles.

The new platform is planned to have a rear-engine, rear-drive chassis. It will be employed for the new Smart Fortwo car, to be introduced in 2013, and for the planned Forfour model in 2014. The platform will also be utilized by Renault for its new car models, including the Twizy electric automobile.

Meanwhile, it is uncertain whether the Renault-owned Dacia, Nissan and Samsung will have access to the new platform. Nissan had earlier planned a new vehicle model positioned beneath the Micra, which is to be assembled at its Sunderland plant. However, its future at the moment looks unsure.

Renault and Mercedes also agree to share new engines, which are designed differently from Smart and created particularly for the rear-drive platform. The modern engines will be fixed to a six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed, double-clutch transmission.

Moreover, the two car firms are working on a series of sub 1.8-litre, four-cylinder diesel and petrol engines that could be used in more advanced versions of the Forfour. The engines can also be installed in the next A and B-classes, and future models of the Clio, Megane, Modus, Scenic and Twingo.

Due to the resemblance in mechanical design, it is probable that the new Forfour will be manufactured by Renault, alongside its modern four-door model. Meanwhile, the Fortwo car will be assembled at Smart’s plant in Hambach, France.

A cooperation with Renault regarding smaller cars would be super for Mercedes. Renault is, without doubt, one of the sports oriented small-car brands.

Penske Still Enthusiastic Over Smart Brand, Despite Plunging Sales

By Herb Shuldiner - WardsAuto.com

NEW YORK – Roger Penske, chief of Penkse Automotive Group’s Smart U.S.A. Distributor LLC, still is enthused about selling Daimler AG’s A-segment car, despite its precipitous plunge in sales in the year’s first quarter. Penske says his dealers also remain confident in the brand’s future.

However, he suggests Daimler needs to emulate BMW AG’s Mini brand in evolving a market plan that creates some derivatives to expand the Smart product portfolio. Penske tells Ward’s Daimler has the right to buy back a 50% share of the exclusive Smart distribution operation after five years. “If they want it back, then I’d be happy to sell it to them,” Penske says, although he doesn’t appear eager to abandon his exclusive arrangement.

A Daimler spokeswoman here declines to confirm this arrangement. Details of the exclusive contract’s “duration and maturity are confidential,” she says. “(They) only concern the contractual partners, and thus are not being made public.” Smart sales fell to 1,397 for the year’s first quarter, compared with 4,937 units in like-2009, according to Ward’s data.

But Penske insists there has been no wholesale defection of dealers, and he is confident in the staying power of the Smart brand in the U.S. While he would like to see additional models added to the Smart portfolio, he declines to comment on what those derivatives might be.

This week, Daimler signed a deal with Renault SA and Nissan Motor Co. Ltd to collaborate on future small cars, including next-generation Smarts due in 2013.
