S220CDI coming next year

Re: S220CDI comming nex year

I can't believe this!!! :t-banghea (sorry, Eni, you were right, my bad...):D

Is it going to sit on 195/60/14 rims as well? :t-banghea

Lol and come with cloth seats? Although a 2.2L engine in an S-class turns me off, I'm pretty confident the torque developed by that diesel engine will be sufficient enough go get the car up and running.

I don't doubt that as well, but somehow i think the S won't be that exclusive anymore... 4cyl W221 S? How does it sound to you? Or how about 720d?:t-crazy2:

Yeah, i'm seeing Eni and other guys speaking about fuel efficiency and other (smart) stuff, but...

No, excuse me and call me what you will, but i think that sucks! I simply can't imagine an S with that badge... or 7er... These are flagships for .... sake!!!

Very true Sasha but will this model even be sold in Europe? Isn't it meant for non-MEDC in South America, Africa, East Europe and Asia?

Right, that can be only reason for all of this and probably it is, but still... I don't like that. I was also surprised when i found out (not so long ago!) that there was a S280 (W220!) as well... I think it was for Asian and African market, but i'm sure i'm slightly wrong though. For some other market(s) as well...

Oh well, like they care for me anyways...:D

there has been lower engines than 320 in the S before..but its for other markets..
not for us or europe..so if this has the same destiny im happy..
but if we get this in europe its a freakin disgrace..

It's so hard to find a Diesel Engine Mercedes S-Klass (W126-W140-W220) in Chinese market.

There is a S280 W221 model on sale in the UK now. It is not as slow as some would have you think (0-60 in 7.3s, top speed limited to 155mph).

I appreciate what you both are saying, I believe you. Regardless of it's performance, still this is a flagship, more than 2 tons of weight, big luxury sedan, the S... A 320CDI should be minimum... 4cyl and 2.2L is very low for this car. This is not C or E!

According to this: Watch out Lexus LS 600h: Mercedes S-Class hybrid coming to Frankfurt

It's in conjunction with a HYBRID SYSTEM. And the details are still sketchy so we might not even know for sure that this car will be powered by a 4-cylinder CDI engine. MB is working on a 2.2-l 200-horsepower CDI engine to replaced the aging current '220 CDI motor found in cars like the C220 CDI and E220 CDI. This could be the engine in question. :eusa_thin

No Mercedes S-Class has ever had a 4-cylinder engine: even the lowest models were always 6-cylinder powered.

It's in conjunction with a HYBRID SYSTEM.

I think that this is the key piece of information missing from the original AMuS article (at least I think it is missing, my German is not that good!).

A 200hp 4 cylinder in conjunction with a hybrid electric motor would be plausible.

Remember, the first S320 CDI has a mere 197-horsepower and it was quite fast for its time and fuel efficient. 10 years later, a potential 2.2-l 300-hp S-Class should be capable of whooping it. :usa7uh:

Either way, I am still sketchy about this. Seems kind of odd that a "4-cylinder" S-Class is in the works. I'll wait until I hear more about it.

Awhile ago, there was some article on Autolies about a a 4.5-l V8 C-Class with a 6-speed manual transmission. :t-crazy2:

Check out the bulls*** below. :t-crazy2:

Mercedes developing 35MPG Bluetec diesel S-class
Tuesday 5 June 2007

Mercedes-Benz is reported to be developing a new version of its S-class limo equipped with an ultra-efficient Bluetec diesel engine. With a motor displacing just 2.2L, the new diesel driven S-class should return a fuel economy rating of just 6.6L per 100km, or roughly 35mpg.

We should get our first glimpse of the new car at September’s Frankfurt Auto Show, with production scheduled to start towards the end of next year. Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport reports that Mercedes will be combining the four-cylinder oil-burner with its new mild-hybrid system to achieve the amazingly low consumption figures.

Mercedes previously showcased a Bluetec hybrid S-Class concept at the 2005 Frankfurt Auto Show, but unlike the concept car which featured a V6 powerplant, the production version will run a twin-turbo four-cylinder motor that produces 204hp.

The vehicle will be in full compliance with future Euro 6 emissions standards, which are expected to roll in by 2014, and we should see its efficient powertrain eventually offered in the E and C-class range.

I'm 100% certain it's for markets like those you've mentioned. It's also where you will see W221 S300s...

Pardon me but my dad used to own a W220 S280. :D Underpowered, I agree, but more than sufficient for city driving.

Looks like its badged as the S300 here. It's a pretty decently quick car.

Anyway, althought I feel the same way about the prestige of the S-Class being diluted with this 4-cyl, I'm thinking, if it produces enough power than the engines it replaces, then why not?

Yeah, but the only thing is that when you open the hood there'll still be plenty of empty space, enough for two more engines of same size...:D
