Rolls-Royce CEO Tom Purves would like to make an electric-powered Phantom. ‘Many of our customers do small mileages exclusively in the city,’ says Purves, who took over the helm of BMW-owned Rolls-Royce in July 2008. ‘For these customers, an electric Rolls-Royce would be ideal.’

Purves has just driven the new electric Mini, which debuts at next month’s Los Angeles auto show, and was ‘bowled over by it. It is superb: quiet, fast and fantastic fun’.

An electric Rolls-Royce, says Purves, would be in keeping with the Rolls brand. ‘We stand for unmatched refinement and you can’t get a quieter and less intrusive engine than a well engineered electric motor. Truly, the loudest noise you would hear would be the tick of the clock,’ he says, referring to an old Rolls marketing message. ‘We also stand for strong and instant torque – and an electric motor delivers maximum torque instantly. The “waftability” would be fantastic.’

Well, this one car maker's only reason is more comfort...he doesn't care about emmissions :D

Seriously though, why wouldn't they? I think it's a sweet idea....A Phantom with electric engine would have like 1000 Nm to propel the car forward.

And by judging from the Mini electric, it would not have rear seats :D

:t-roses:

But seriously an all electric Rolls-Royce is silly, they won't make a diesel yet will make a electric car:eusa_thin

and plus all the electrics use more electric than a Prius:D

Imo, that heavy-ass Phantom still won't manage to do anything better than 10mpg cuz' size does matters :D ...!

Rolls-Royce are currently planning to bring a new model online, namely a larger saloon, which is slated to be based on the Phantom chassis, and could carry the name Wraith. This model could be powered by a 9.0 liter V-16 with as much as 712 BHP and would be electroniclly limited to a topseed of 170 MPH. My sources suggest this model will be based on the Phanom's aluminum spaceframe, but will offer a more luxurious interior. Also this model will be priced above the Phantom. With the body panels slated to be made of aluminum. Also are rumors of Rolls-Royce'splans for the Bonneville Salt flat racer, which could see limited production with a price tag of $1,000,000 + USDM. This model will mak sense of the development of the M1's aluminum spaceframe chassis, for a model of this caliber. According to my sources the plan is to offer a 725 BHP version of the 9.0 liter V-16, with a possible twin-turbo version to come later with as much as 1120 BHP.

There are some rumours about the next line up of Rolls-Royce which I was sent and wish to debunk.

First of all the Wraith , As discussed here previously in the RR4 thread ,The possibility of a 4dr Coupe based on the RR4 and seen as the logical step for the stillborn BMW CS Concept is very much in planning as an additional model between the Ghost and the Phantom.
Rolls-Royce are planning to introduce DropHead and Coupe versions of the RR4 in which both would welcome some design detail changes to seperate it from the Ghost. The Wraith would be a fast back coupe shape with long front end and short sloping tail. Powered by the same V12 as found in the Ghost, which in an updated format will power the next generation of Phantom.

A V16 is not feasible today and having up to over 1000PS sounds insane as Rolls-Royce is not and has ever been about extreme power.
The Saltflat Racer is not happening unless it is based on the 1er because there is no platform or basis for an M1.

Whereas the current development is focused on additional variants of the Ghost and the first preliminary work of the next Phantom.
The current strategy is really what is relevant for tomorrow and that sharing the same hybrid drivetrain from the upoming BMW 7er will be tested in the Ghost as BMW have now extended hybrid development to Rolls-Royce - This is more relevant than over 1000PS V16's.
