LEDs under main headlight structures

Adding a line of LEDs under the headlight projectors seems to be a very popular design feature nowadays. Audi has used them in many models, VW Phaeton got them with the facelift, Lancia is using them in Delta and now the latest manufacturer who adds them is MB with the S-Class facelift. So do you like this feature?

Some examples:

What the hell is that 4th car?

Edit: Lancia, OK.

Yes, in the applications pictured I like.

LOL It's Lancia Delta. :usa7uh:
Anyway, you didn't answer my question. Do you like this design element?

Edit: You did after all. :D

Personally I like it if it's done well. For example in the Audi A5 it works very well but in the A6 the implementation is poor IMO. It just looks cheap/aftermarket.

I don't like it in the S6 because it looks like an afterthought: it seems not to be under the two lamps, but in front of them like if it had been added to the standard unit.

On the Phaeton, as the two circular lamps clearly are above the LEDs it's better.

On the S I quite like it, an especially the fact that the LEDs line in the unit is echoed by the LEDs unit in the bumpers, as they have the same shape. However to be honest, i think it's bit too much LEDs in the case of the S, I could do without these LEDs in the main unit.

However, for the S, if I understood it right the LEDs of the main unit are in fact the indicators, it just so happens that they are softly lit in combination with the main lamps, but they're not strong as DRLs. It could look nice to see them changing colors, from powerful orange to soft white...

In the case of the A5 it's stunning, the best LEDs implementation I've ever seen.

I completely agree with you on the afterthought -look.

It's funny but the S6 is the only A6 model that doesn't have the LEDs in the main headlight unit. The facelifted S6 still has DRL LEDs located on the bumper. That's why I think it's the best-looking A6 model. :usa7uh:

I'd say the A5 has the best application of LEDs in the main headlight cluster. The S-class is pushing the limit with additional LEDs in the bumper. Just wait until the car begin rolling out in central London, the ricers will go "WICKED BRUV!!" Occasionally I see cars of all sorts with bright blue LEDs glued to the main head light cluster heck the last one I saw was a VW mini bus. It will only be a matter of time before the Japanese jump on it as well. BMW are doing and excellent job staying away from it.

This novelty is wearing out fast....unlike BMW's Angel Eyes who are here to stay forever :0vr::0vr:
It does look good on some cars...like the S with AMG pack, or A5.

When the actual LED light does not interfere with the projectors and other lights, its okay and all of the cars don't do that..Apart from one, the A6!! I hate it how its in front of the projector, In my opinion the projectors gives the whole light character and should not be interfered with.

I hate them all, including 911TT ones and R8. They all look like the cheap ass LED strips you can find at your local electronics store. They are tacky and belong on a Christmas tree not a car.

Well u guys are forgetting Maserati and Lamborghini too..:D

You're right, the Maserati QP got them with the facelift. :usa7uh: The Lambo lights are quite different in design, they comprise of three separate parts and aren't horizontal bars like these.

Nope, I only meant the horizontal LED bar in the main headlight unit under the projectors like I already mentioned.

But why not limit ur options? make it all LED designs in headlights.:D

I'm with Sunny (though 'hate' is a bit strong of a word for me). Eventhough they may look impressive when switched on at night, this whole idea of simple LEDs in the headlight cluster screams 'after-thought' in my mind....and it's no suprise I think that considering how many cars which have had a mid-life facelift now have these LEDs.
When it comes to Audi using them (and now the other VAG stable cars) I've always viewed them as a tacky competition to BMW's angel rings. Call me a BMW fan, but that's just how I've viewed Audi's attempt to give the car a striking look at night. I guess that's just natural since the angel rings really do look amazing since being debuted on the E39 5er.

Just 2 quick question, do these LEDs in the headlights (as well as the BMW Angel Rings) have any meaningful/useful purpose in terms of lighting up the road at night time? Yes they may be used as Daytime Running Lights, but are they any good at night time besides for scoring points in the Looks Department?
In terms of the LEDs used in the lower front-bumper section (eg: Audi S6 and S-class facelift), are they an effective replacement for foglights? For example, if the car was actually in foggy situations, would it have anywhere near the same benefit as traditional foglights.. or again are they mostly a vanity/cool-factor thing?

I call vanity. None of the LEDs I've seen so far are powerful to the levels of traditional halogens. They merely serve as keeping the car visible during day time but have no usability in keeping the road lit.

May I say this: Thank God BMW still doesn't use LED's in the front of their cars. They canceled the M3 CSL, the Concept CS, they made the X5/X6 M. At least they do not use LEDs. :D
