Hi Everyone,
After Dominix suggestion of having a Photoshop: Before & After thread, I felt it was a very very good idea, and therefore, similar to the thread titles 'Discuss an Idea: Photo Feedback and Tips thread', I've now created this discussion thread so we can share thoughts on how this can be implemented, and of course what sort of rules are needed to keep this idea on track once a dedicated thread is created.
Firstly, for those who haven't read the brief discussion within the Automotive photography thread, the idea of a 'Photoshop: Before & After' thread (as the name suggests) is all about posting 2 photos, one which shows the original photo straight from the camera (resized of course), and the second photo being the final version after enhamcents have been made in Photoshop (or any other photo-editing software).
The reasoning for this idea is NOT about showing-off your photoshop talents, but rather for all of us to learn different skills/techniques/tricks/tools that we each use to further enhance our photos. How many times have you looked at a photo and thought 'Damn, why can't I get my photo to look that good eventhough I took nearly the same thing!?'.... with this thread, you don't have to do a bunch of google searches, or take forever doing trial and error to try and get a specific effect to your photos. There's no real sense of competition in our community, so I'm sure we are all willing to open-up and share our photoshop skills with each other.
As Dominic stated in his suggestion, you post 2 photos, one of the original photo, and then the final enhanced version, but what is also required is a brief explanation of the various enhancements you did in Photoshop. This can be done in a simple dot-point/bullet-point style, but of course the more you can elaborate, the more everyone can learn.
Again, similar to the sister-discussion thread about Photo Feedback & Tips, all posts should be done in a positive, encouraging and respectful manner.
In terms of rules, I guess the following issues should be discussed:
Image size: similar to the other thread, keep this limited to 1024x768
Number of photos: In terms of a 2-photo combination (ie: before and after photos), each member should be limted to a maximum of 4 per week
Level of enhancements: I feel that photoshop 'chops' (as opposed to simply enhancing a photo) should not be allowed, unless they are minor chops (such as deleted a distracting tree branch in the background or something)...but no major chops like taking a photo of your car, then chopping the car onto a background of a sunset beach, or adding a 3rd eye to your friends face.
I'm not too skilled with Photoshop's more advance tools (I only use Elements, not CS), so maybe other members who have more knowledge on photo-enhancing programs can provide more suggestions on rules and restrictions.
Just to make it clear, this is a DISCUSSION thread at the moment. Once we have created ground rules, we can then create a dedicated thread for this idea and we can begin posting Before & After photos for everyone to enjoy and more importantly: learn from.
Feel free to give suggestion, no matter how big or small.
