Post Official: Passat BlueMotion

World premiere of the Passat BlueMotion in Geneva

Low fuel consumption: Passat BlueMotion consumes just 5.1 litres of diesel over 100 km

It just keeps running: Passat BlueMotion with 1,350 km range

Wolfsburg, 12 February 2007 - The new Passat BlueMotion – no other vehicle of its size consumes less fuel. The saloon needs exactly 5.1 litres of diesel for 100 km. And just as convincing: a CO2 emission level of just 136 g/km. The world premiere of the Passat BlueMotion is 6th March at the Geneva Motor Show.

With the new Passat BlueMotion, Volkswagen is forcing ahead with the launch of vehicles that are particularly efficient and environmentally friendly. The first BlueMotion model was the Polo in the summer of 2006– an immediate success and its production figures have already been increased threefold due to the high demand throughout Europe. "BlueMotion" is now the seal of quality for a model version with the lowest rate of fuel consumption.

With reference to the new Passat BlueMotion this means: an average of 5.1 litres of diesel over 100 kilometres. The Passat Estate BlueMotion needs 5.2 litres (137 g/km) – also a top value, even in comparison to vehicles worldwide. Both body versions have a driving range of up to 1,350 kilometres with a full tank! With an average annual distance driven of 15,000 kilometres, this means that the driver only needs to refuel eleven times a year with an average of 68 Euro* in fuel costs per month.

Volkswagen can achieve such low consumption figures through the fine tuning of the engine, which was already extremely efficient. In this case a 77 kW / 105 bhp TDI engine with a diesel particulate filter fitted as standard. This fuel efficiency does not, however, reduce levels of agility. The Passat BlueMotion can accelerate up to 193 km/h (Estate: 190 km/h) if required. That is an element of the BlueMotion philosophy: fuel efficiency and agility in a combination that still makes driving fun.

Re: Official: Passat BlueMotion

I didn't know that VW would present a bigger BlueMotion model. I must say, the fuel economy of this car is really impressive Maybe later, they are going to present a BlueMotion version of the Touareg or the Phaeton too.

This Bluemotion thing is so good they should make it standard on all of their diesel models.

This makes the Passat also interesting for companies and their fleet of cars...

...we need more vehicle manufacturer, which will go this way of new technology (not even Mercedes and Volkswagen)!!

Sounds like you should stay on the right side ("truck side") of the Autobahn with this car.

Here in germany, you really have to...but on longer distances, the Passat could be faster, because of his range...

...but also our E-Class has a maximum range of more then 1000 km, when you will driving it with around 120 km/h on the autobahn...!!

Not really. Trucks are by law mandated to drive 80 km/h and 193 km/h is still pretty quick. People always assume that speeds above 200 km/h are "the real thing" when in reality, 160 km/h+ is already very fast.

193 km/h top speed is a decent figure for such an economical family car. Besides, on the Autobahns, all cars are supposed to drive on the "slow lane" and only should use the left lane for overtaking.

German Society for Nature Conservation NABU drives Passat Variant BlueMotion

Volkswagen hands over Passat Variant BlueMotion to Germany’s largest nature conservation association

Wolfsburg, 18 July 2007 - NABU, the German Society for Nature Conservation, now drives the Passat Variant BlueMotion. Stephan Grühsem, General Representative of Volkswagen AG, today handed over a Passat Variant BlueMotion to Leif Miller, Director of NABU, in Wolfsburg. With the Passat, Volkswagen is continuing its BlueMotion sustainability initiative launched very successfully with the Polo in 2006. The BlueMotion trademark is to be used as a seal of approval in various model series, indicating the most fuel-efficient vehicle in a range.

"With the Passat BlueMotion Variant, we are delighted to be providing our long-standing cooperation partner NABU with a vehicle for its non-profit work. This Passat BlueMotion Variant admirably meets the demands of environment- and climate-compatible mobility," Stephan Grühsem, General Representative of Volkswagen, said as the vehicle was handed over to NABU.

"NABU welcomes Volkswagen’s BlueMotion series, since it demonstrates the enormous potential for enhancing efficiency which can be leveraged in new vehicle development within a short space of time and at no significant additional cost. The Passat BlueMotion with its standard diesel particulate filter and CO2 emissions of less than 140 g/km raises the environmental yardstick in this vehicle class," Leif Miller, Director of NABU, commented. The Passat is the second series model after the Polo BlueMotion to be presented by Volkswagen bearing the BlueMotion trademark; like the Polo BlueMotion, the Passat is equipped with a standard diesel particulate filter. Continuous refinement of the drivetrain, chassis and body has resulted in exceptionally good consumption and emission values: the Passat BlueMotion saloon has an average diesel consumption of 5.1 liters per 100 kilometers, and the Passat BlueMotion Variant consumes an average of 5.2 liters, a saving of 0.6 liters compared with a series salon and 0.7 liters compared with a series estate. Low consumption corresponds with reduced CO2 emissions of 136g/km for the saloon and 137g/km for the estate version. The Passat BlueMotion was successfully launched on the market early this summer.

Cooperation between Volkswagen and NABU began in 1999. The partners initiate joint projects for sustainable development in Germany. Apart from the fuel saving training sessions offered throughout Germany, these projects also include the "Willkommen Wolf!" campaign to create a habitat for wolves living in the wild in Germany. Joint workshops and discussion forums on all issues relating to mobility organized by Volkswagen and NABU lend momentum to a modern transport and environment policy. To support this non-profit commitment, Volkswagen regularly provides NABU with models from the latest product range.
