E-Class W124 ^^The Great Mercedes-Benz W124 BUYERS GUIDE^^

The Mercedes-Benz W124 is a range of executive cars made by Daimler-Benz from 1984 to 1997. From 1993, the 124 series was officially marketed as the E-Class. The W124 followed the 123 series from 1984 and was succeeded by the W210 E-Class (saloons, estates, rolling chassis) after 1995, and the C208 CLK-Class (coupés, and cabriolets) in 1997.

Thanks a lot. I've always liked the W124, just one of the best cars ever produced.

Do you have anything about the C126? Just love that car...

It still looks so fresh. I much prefer this clean and quietly sophisticated design to what Mercedes is doing now.

In a way I agree with you.. The W124 was an orignal. MB is all about fashion now.

When I became an MB fan some time back I began to notice a lot of orignal ideas that the W124 was using, like the single front wiper-blade that covered
86% of the windshield. I began to wonder why MB left that idea with the later E-Class models.

Oh...if you have ever driven in a hugh rain storm, you would know why the single-blade was dropped. (As experienced in my W202).

He he, I have heard about that before .....but I love the single blade as an idea -- it seems so in keeping with the overall simplicity of the W124's character -- it is a very elegant car ....extremely well designed and engineered all round -- this is what a real Mercedes is all about for me.

Yes, the big and slow and inefficient single-wiper...Loves the way it moved. But was really not very useful when it rained a bit too much...

These cars were just fabulous.

I recently read that it wasn't a very efficient design overall. The reason Mercedes went with single wipers was for reducing drag (one wiper, less drag than two).

My dad's '89 500SL (R129) has this. Come to think of it I drove the car about a week ago in a heavy rainstorm and I just couldn't help but feel that the single wiper at max speed was "underpowered / overworked". :usa7uh:

C126 against C140... my choice is easy to make... The C140 is a technical masterpiece, but God is it ugly to look at!

The C126, simply perfect. See some of them in Germany, they are wonderful.
W124 too, my Dad had a 300 Turbodiesel 143cv, just loved it. The noise what that of a petrol 6-cylinder engine!!! :icondrool

I saw once a black C126 AMG, with black rear lights, black rims and all that... Just stunning. Scaring...

The Benz were so cool in those times... Now the coolest Benz is the... G55AMG...

However, a black CL 63AMG is parked next to where I actually works, it has the big grill and the spirit of the C126 on it I think.

I'm so glad Mercedes is back to the times of its glory...

I can't stand the C140 as well. I drove one once too. It was just terrible. ZERO steering feedback and boaty. A car for an older person essentially. :usa7uh:

I will look for more W126/C126 scans ASAP. Give me time! :D

That was a built in safety feature to get the driver to slow down. No wonder they are the safest cars in the world. :D

We used to have a E280, a great car despite some mysterious leaks  Rock solid interior build quality, beautiful materials.
The single wiper was cool i think, it moved quick enough, for us at least, and that wiper is really funny.. when the window is really wet and you have someone standing beside the car on the outside, water just splashes out on the person... :t-cheers: my dad got me once:eusa_doh:

Christiaan, you're awesome!!! Just what I wanted. Thanks a lot! :t-cheers:

Anytime. Let me know if you need anything else. There are so many articles I have not scanned yet, but those are all the W124 articles in my collection. :usa7uh: :t-cheers:

Thanks so much for this:t-cheers:
Im possibly acquiring a 300TE in the near future and reading this really make me want it even more. It would be my first car and some guy I sail with is going to give it to me because he is sailing around the world and cannot use a car on his sailboat. So it mite become mine:D

Anytime. :t-cheers:

The '300 is a good choice. I have the same engine, the M103 E30, in my 300SE. It's a superb blend between power and fuel economy. If you must get a diesel, the 300D Turbo's are very good for their age, definitely not that slow either. :usa7uh:

The single wiper was quick for its time, but in really really bad weather, it was hopelessly overworked. Trust me, we have one in the family. :D
