Porsche to offer hybrid Panamera?

Porsche's Panamera sedan will be offered with three different gasoline engines ranging from 400 to 500 horsepower. None of this should come as a surprise, but the German automaker has another trick up its sleeve — a hybrid powertrain, says the U.K.'s Car magazine.

Geared toward green motoring enthusiasts, the car will be equipped with a V6 putting out 300 hp, the report says. Other engine choices will include the 4.8L V8 engine found in the Cayenne — which puts out 400 hp with 415 lb/ft of torque — and a turbo version of that motor which is expected to deliver 500 horsepower.

The hybrid version will also offer the unique ability to accelerate quickly thanks to an additional 100 hp available in short spurts.
Porsche is also expected to an all-wheel-drive option for the car. While the gasoline Panamera is expected to arrive in 2009, the hybrid version will be a 2011 model, the report claims.

Hidrib is going to be the next big thing and Porsche is working on an Hydrib engine together with VAG.

" Porsche to offer hybrid Panamera?"

I would hope so. I'd love to see a true high performance saloon with hybrid technology. Interesting article

Good to hear.

Social responsibility is a must. Can't say the same for Maserati drivers.

Re: Porsche to offer hybrid Panamera?

Full parallel hybrid

The Porsche Panamera will have to hit the ground running at the end of the decade in order to compete with the Aston Martin Rapide, Mercedes CLS, BMW 8-Series and in the lower regions of the four-door GT class, the VW Passat Coupe. One major selling point for the Panamera might become the availability of a full parallel hybrid engine, offering consumption of less than 9 liter per 100 kilometers.

The newly developed full parallel hybrid system is based on the current Porsche Cayenne Hybrid will consist primarely of the battery unit in the luggage compartment, power electronics, and an additional clutch and electric motor between the engine and transmission. This set-up allows the car to be driven using the gasoline engine (classic Porsche sport style), electric engine (emissions free all-electric driving) or use them both as one power unit, combining the best of both worlds.

The Porsche Panamera will initially be offered with proven drivetrains in 2009 with a hybrid version following later, depending on market requirements.

Press Release

Hybrid Drive on the Porsche Panamera

Dr. Ing. h. c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, will also be building a hybrid drive version of the new Panamera. This four-door Gran Turismo with sporting driving dynamics so typical of Porsche will boast the proven components featured in the Cayenne Hybrid entering the market at the end of the decade. And thanks to its newly developed full parallel hybrid, Porsche’s Sports Utility will offer average fuel consumption of less than 9 litres/100 kilometres.

The new Porsche Panamera will be the first four-door sports model to feature particularly fuel-efficient full parallel hybrid technology. At the same time the Panamera will also benefit from the experience then gained by the Porsche Cayenne as a pioneer in hybrid drive.

The newly developed full parallel hybrid system will consist primarily of the battery unit positioned in the luggage compartment, the power electronics, and the hybrid module between the engine and transmission comprising an additional clutch and the electric motor. Depending on driving conditions, the hybrid module is able to disengage either the combustion engine or the electric motor, or to combine both drive systems as one joint power unit. Hence, the Panamera may be driven in a number of different modes ranging from all-electric drive absolutely free of emissions all the way to the sporting style of motoring so typical of a Porsche.

The fourth model series coming from the sports car manufacturer in Stuttgart also boasts other striking features, the wide and low body offering dynamic proportions and muscular design for an outstandingly sporting and at the same time compact overall look.

The space available inside the car offers a brand-new experience of roominess. The two sporting and comfortable single seats at the rear will allow adults to relax with surprisingly generous headroom, in full comfort and, if they wish, with all the performance and speed of a genuine Gran Turismo.

Sitting in the elegant and modern cockpit with its high-quality materials, the driver will enjoy all the sporting and unmistakable driving dynamics so typical of every Porsche. The new Panamera Gran Turismo will be making its world debut in 2009 and will be introduced initially with proven drive concepts. The hybrid version will follow later, depending on market requirements.
