C-Class [Spy shots] Mercedes-Benz AMG GT (C190)

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class is a series of compact executive cars produced by Mercedes-Benz Group AG. Introduced in 1993 as a replacement for the 190 (W201) range, the C-Class was the smallest model in the marque's line-up until the W168 A-Class arrived in 1997.

Cornering Kingpin
Mercedes-Benz apparently went back to the drawing board and devised a new sports car, as we now have the first spy shots of a prototype for it, which our sources tell us doesn’t share anything in common with the SLS. The new car, which carries the internal code C190, will target younger buyers than those of the retro-inspired SLS, and its styling, which already appears much more modern than that of the SLS, will reflect that.

It will have traditional doors and its engine, an AMG-built V-8, mounted up front. It’s not clear if all-wheel drive will be offered, but given the AMG division’s newfound love of all-wheel-drive cars it’s entirely possible. Another indication that all-wheel drive may at least be offered is the sighting of a Nissan GT-R testing alongside it. We do know it will be significantly smaller than the SLS, as the spy shots confirm, meaning a lighter curb weight. A new aluminum spaceframe structure has been developed, which should help keep weight below 3,300 pounds. The SLS, which also features aluminum construction, weighs more than 3,600 pounds.

The most likely engine option is a version of AMG's latest 5.5-liter twin-turbo V-8, although a smaller twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 said to be in the works is also possible. Power should rate at roughly 500 horsepower. AMG’s seven-speed SPEEDSHIFT dual-clutch ‘box, meanwhile, will handle gear changes. It will be mounted at the rear to help even out the weight distribution. A reveal of the new car, whatever it’s called, is expected in the second half of 2014, with sales to start shortly after.

A convertible is expected roughly one year after the launch of this coupe version, and it’s almost certain an even higher performance Black Series model will eventually be launched. Note, while the new sports car replaces the SLS AMG in the Mercedes-Benz lineup, the two cars may be sold side by side initially. A minor facelift for the larger SLS AMG is in the works, which means it isn't yet ready for its swan song.

Hmmmm...I'll believe it when the officially announce something. Why buy a SLS if you're going to build a lighter, more agile car under it. The SLS will need to move up in peformance, price and interior. On the other hand, what will the SLC do the SL? One luxury and the other sports car? Maybe. Either way I don't think Mercedes needs this unless they're going to to do an all out 458i/911 killer, something much more hardcore then the SLS. Doing that though will push the SLS even more into GT territory??????

I really like this rendering by Autocar. The detailing of the rendering is really nice. Looks very promising and I hope the real deal will resemble this rendering.

The SLS is not a long-life model and will probably be phased out in 2013 or 2014. So I don't see any significant problems.

There are some conflicting reports regarding the SLC. The German publications are speculating an AMG-designed twin-turbo V6 powerplant instead of a V8 powerplant.

All we need is a nice interior.

Great concept.

I really hope they put a naturally aspirated engine and don't put a turbocharged engine in this flagship car.

I think it looks awesome..Also i think Mercedes needs a car above the SLS..

Something like teh SLR maybe even above that..Something that is in the top range and keep the SLS and maybe a mini SLS for normal sports cars..

A mighty supersportscar to take on the lambo and cars like that..

Will be interesting to see how they manage to position this between the SL and the SLS. Might need to call in the BMW boys to help them with the marketing spin. :D

As hot as that CGI looks it's probably just fantastical speculation and far from reality.

I think Ferrari has a similar arrangement right now with the 599, 458, California, which mirrors MB's potential line up of the SLS, SLC, and the SL. Ferrari seems to be doing quite well with their current lineup, the 458 is more hardcore, lighter, more agile than the 599 and cheaper too, but the 599 does have that V12 engine, which for some people, is a must when they buy a Ferrari.

At around 4.6m long the SLS isn't exactly long, it is about the length of a C-class and around the same size as the 599. The smaller SLC will definitely be in the category as the Vantage and the 911, which leaves the SLS to take on the 599 and the DBS. The SL will continue to do it own thing and serve the current owners.

^ Yep I guess that is what I was thinking and trying to say. I just wonder if Mercedes' rigid thinking/marketing can pull off such a marketing excercise. The SLS is going to need a performance boost IMO, and a new interior before Mercedes slots in a bespoke car under it.

A SLS Black Series was part of the business plan since the very beginning. But the global green movement and environmental conscienceness makes such a high performance model difficult to sell and is probably now on the backburner (at least difficult to sell to the Mercedes Benz Board of Directors). Hence the push to get the SLS-E Cell into limited production.

I also doubt the SLS will ever see a major interior facelift as it is a relatively short-lifecycle niche model. Maybe we'll see an updated version of the COMAND unit, but that would be it. I'm also not a fan of the SLS's interior.

The SLC is a very different product compared to the SLS. The SLC will be the first volume model that will be exclusively designed and engineered by AMG and not a souped up version of a volume C, E, or S Class. AMG needs this model to strengthen its profile as a sportscar manufacturer.

I think we are forgetting something guys. What if this is the SLS replacement?. I think in 2014 the SLS will be gone. This will be cheaper, no doubt but, will we see another car in the price range of the SLS?. MB might prefer to go cheaper and boost sales. They already did this same with the SLS, that is way less expensive than the SLR.

In just 3 years the SLS is gone? No way that is correct. It will get a facelift and go the normal life cycle, too much investment for it to go away in just 3 more years.

You gotta hate that crap. I can't stand when folks think that all of a sudden everything should be done differently, which leads to everything having to be changed. Come on!

It's just like the healthy group telling McDonalds to fire Ronald McDonald and stop selling happy meals because some kids are getting to fat. Really? Tell the parents to stop taking them.

I hate that the car industry has to back track on some of their plans because people want hybrid and environmentally friendly cars. 200 SLS Black series isn't going to destroy everything. BS!

I find all these environmental talks highly hypocritical, is MB really that worried about the negative environmental image of the SLS BS that they delayed/cancelled the car? I am sure there are more than 200 people who are more than willing to give MB the cash for such a car.

If MB is really that concerned then they should not produce vehicles such as the ML63 or the G55.

5 years, the same time the SLR, and the normal life cycle for a Ferrari, for example.

Anyway, the question is the same, will the SLS have a replacement?.

The SLS isn't going way in calendar year 2013, no matter how you count the model years. I'll believe that when I see it. The electric version doesn't even come out until 2013 and there will be a black series version (hopefully) and some type of facelift. The car just came out for 2011, 2013 is not 5 years in, not even in model years.

will the SLS have a replacement?

If they do, I hope it's a more powerful supercar...Maybe an Aventador competitor or something.

Then again I couldn't see the SLC being a successor to the SLS with them talking about it so early.

Whatever it is...I hope it performs well and looks good.

No, I´m not saying what you think. I count the car life starting in September 2009, when the first pictures were shown. I think the car will have a 5 years life, so September 2014 would be the date.

If you don´t agree then perfect, it´s your opinion, but what I´m saying is this.

From when pictures were shown? That doesn't count towards a car's shelf/market life man..lol. But ok.

The debut of the car doesn´t count?. Well it doesn´t matter, I say 5 years, how many do you think it´s goint to stay here?.
