Daimler is planning an E-scooter

Hamburg - Daimler is planning an E-scooter. Dieter Zetsche, CEO of Daimler AG, surprised the audience of the ZEIT MATINEE with this news. In an interview with Josef Joffe, editor of ZEIT, and Rüdiger Grube, Board Chairman of the German Railway, Zetsche said on 4 July 2010: "We will soon present an e-Roller."

In addition, Daimler will soon introduce an S-Class, which will be driving electrically up to 50 percent and consumes only three liters of fuel. Total energy in Germany is too expensive. For this reason, many companies would emigrate from Germany. It is therefore, said Zetsche, "crazy to abandon nuclear power."

Rüdiger Grube announced for the clients of Deutsche Bahn a "transition free mobility". He sees a future without the ticket office where you could reach across the system with the smartphone.

Zetsche stressed that, overall, a "technological paradigm shift must take place:" We are now in a dramatic change. The Daimler chief continued: "Our strengths lie in technology and logistics." Therefore, education is a crucial economic factor in Germany. However, it should not be on the descending branch. "We are squandering opportunities and potentials", Zetsche continued. The planned school reform in Hamburg he saw as an attempt to change something for the better.

Grube criticized the introduction of Bachelor and Master degree programs. "We must not give up everything." For example, the German engineer has been recognized internationally. The same is true for the dual training system. This press release is also under presse.zeit.de.

Daimler to present E-scooter Prototype in October

The Stuttgart-based auto manufacturer Daimler will present a prototype e-scooter branded smart at the Paris Motor Show in October, Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche told participants in a podium discussion hosted by the German weekly newspaper Die Zeit. Whether the 2-wheel smart will go into serial production, is still unknown.

In the past 12 months the auto manufacturers Toyota, Volkswagen and Porsche all unveiled prototypes of electric 2-wheel vehicles - Porsche a mountain bike-type pedelec, Volkswagen a foldable e-bike called Bik.e and Toyota a road racer-type pedelec.

This week Daimler followed suit with an announcement that it will present a prototype e-scooter branded smart at the Paris Motor Show to take place from 2 to 17 October.

The Stuttgarter Zeitung reported Zetsche as having said a 2-wheeled e-scooter will fit well in the product range of Daimler's small car brand smart. According to the newspaper, Daimler refused to further comment Zetsche's announcement after the podium discussion and therefore it is still unclear whether the smart e-scooter prototype will ever make it into serial production.

The Stuttgarter Zeitung also warmed up the rumour that Munich-based auto manufacturer BMW is planning the re-introduction of the BMW C1 scooter - this time with an electric motor.

BMW launched the canopy-enclosed BMW C1 in two models in 2001 and seized production again late in 2002, after selling only 10,614 units in 2001 and 2,000 units in 2002.

According to Stuttgarter Zeitung, BMW is working on an e-scooter called C1-E, with components of the US e-scooter manufacturer Vectrix.

Lithium-ion batteries are powering a new wave of e-scooters

Daimler plans an electric scooter as the carmaker moves to build different types of electric vehicles for different market segments. It's not the first motorcycle, by the way, to come from the Stuttgart-based car icon.

Daimler spokeswoman Eva Wiese batted down speculation that Daimler may hand over development of the new e-scooter to its new Chinese electric vehicle partner, BYD, which is specialized in car battery and drive technology.

"We will develop the e-scooter ourselves, using components, of course, from our global network of suppliers," Wiese told Deutsche Welle. "It will be a global product, as all our products are."

While motorcycle manufacturing, arguably, has not been a core competency of Daimler, company co-founder Gottlieb Daimler is credited with having invented the first gasoline engine-powered motorcycle in 1885. Essentially, it was a four-stroke internal combustion engine mounted on a wooden bicycle.

Smart scooter for Paris

Smart is set to reveal a new electric-powered, single track vehicle at the Paris motor show in September, in what sources at parent company Mercedes-Benz describe as the first step in a newly established diversification plan for its stuggling city car division.

The new two-wheeler, which is said to take the form of a plug-in scooter, is being developed as part of a new broad-based mobility strategy aimed at taking Smart into market segments beyond that occupied by its newly facelifted Fortwo and an upcoming rear-engined,-rear-wheel-drive successor to its short-lived Forfour that's due to be launched in 2013.

"Smart was originally established to tackle the need for improved mobility, especially in congested city environments. Up to now we have concentrated our efforts on four-wheel solutions. The next stage is to looking at how to expand beyond this with other environmentally friendly vehicles,” a senior Mercedes-Benz official revealed to Autocar.

Insiders at the German car maker’s headquarters in Stuttgart say the new Smart scooter is being developed in conjunction with prominent component supplier companies and that it could be produced in a number of different factories around the world, including existing plants in China, India and Thailand if a production go-ahead is granted.

Mercedes-Benz recently entered into a €150m (£125m) initiative with German energy supplier ENBW that will see up to 500 electric scooters placed on the streets of Stuttgart in coming months. The co-operation, which will see the establishment of dedicated charging stations around the city, is described as being a central component in plans to create an infrastructure for the beginning of in-the-field testing of the new Smart within the next 12 months.

The new plug-in electric Smart scooter is seen as a response to BMW’s efforts to revive the clever but expensive C1 – the roof-toting bike developed and produced in a partnership between BMW, Bertone and Rotax – as a pure electric vehicle, as previewed by last year’s C1-E concept.

Smart All-Electric E-Scooter Concept Teased Ahead Of Paris Auto Show

By Viknesh Vijayenthiran | AllCarsElectric.com

Last year BMW rolled out its C1-E Concept, an all-electric scooter that represented the automaker’s vision of what a safe, environmentally-friendly and highly practical single track vehicle for city traffic could look like.

Now BMW’s closest rival, Mercedes-Benz, through its Smart car division, is retaliating with its own electric scooter concept that will debut at this month’s 2010 Paris Auto Show. The move is part of a greater plan to diversify Mercedes’ city-car division and hopefully build a presence in what could one day be one of the most hotly contested segments in the world.

The new concept, dubbed the E-Scooter and previewed in these official teaser sketches, features two wheels on a single track and will have plug-in capability, which means users could simply charge up the scooter in their own homes.

Few other details are known but it’s expected that the Smart E-Scooter will feature an electric motor running on lithium-ion batteries and powering the rear wheel. Driving range is expected to be around 60 miles.

The Smart brand was originally established to tackle the need for improved mobility, especially in congested city environments. However, up to now it has concentrated its efforts on four-wheel solutions. The next stage is to look at how to expand beyond this with other environmentally friendly vehicles, such as the E-Scooter.

Other models Mercedes-Benz is expected to launch through its Smart car division in coming years includes an all-electric Fortwo, as well as a new rear-wheel drive successor to the original Forfour four-door model.

Interestingly, BMW through its MINI brand will also be showing new electric scooter concepts at the upcoming Paris event.

Smart E-Scooter concept (2010) first design sketches

By Ben Pulman | Car Magazine Online

These sketches are our first glimpse at the potential future of Smart. Called the E-Scooter, it's a concept that will be unveiled at the 2010 Paris motor show.

So is Smart abandoning cars like the Fortwo to just build Scooters?

No, not a bit of it – there are, in fact, more cars coming too as well. The recent Daimler alliance with Renault-Nissan will see the next Fortwo twinned with the third-gen Twingo (meaning the French city car goes rear-wheel drive), and the Forfour is set for a comeback as well.

But as well as expanding its range of cars, Smart is also looking at the other end of the market. And because a four-wheeled vehicle can’t get much smaller than the Fortwo, Smart has turned to two wheels.

We’ll see the E-Scooter in the metal at the Paris motor show, but in the meantime we hear the lithium-ion battery will give it a zero-emissions range of 62 miles. Smart is also promising ‘extra-ordinary safety features’ so expect the E-Scooter concept to have an airbag as well.

Smart sketches new electric scooter ahead of Paris debut

By Greg Kable | AutoWeek

Daimler-owned Smart has revealed more plans for a plug-in electric scooter that it will debut at the Paris auto show.

Described as a concept with a possible production future, the traditional-looking scooter is being evaluated as a part of plans to significantly broaden the Smart lineup in coming years to broaden its appeal.

Smart released sketches of the new two-wheeler but no technical details.

Insiders say the Smart scooter uses a lithium-ion battery and is capable of traveling up to 60 miles (nearly 97km) on a single charge. The scooter is also rumored to use a specially adapted airbag to provide added protection for the rider in case of an accident.

Automotive News Europe's sister publication AutoWeek first reported the Smart scooter concept in July.

Smart's Paris display will also feature a lightly facelifted version of the ForTwo, the company's sole model until a reborn ForFour is launched in 2012.

Smart rival Mini is also planning to reveal its take on plug-in electric scooters in Paris with a trio of retro-styled two-wheelers, each with the same basic design overlaid with three individual trims, including one that resembles the Mini E.

As with the Smart scooter, Mini is not revealing much about its new concept until closer to its public debut on Sept. 30, but the company did say that it uses a lithium-ion battery that can be recharged.
