This isn't the first time we've seen a mystery AMG model hiding under a sheet, however, this time it's not much of a mystery. We've been looking at the spy photos and videos for the past year, and finally the SL 65 AMG Black Series is ready to debut next month at the Formula One German Grand Prix.

In addition to the SLK 55 and CLK 63, the SL 65 will be the third model added to the ultra exclusive Black Series. Combining racecar performance with a street legal road car, the SL 65, transgresses from domesticated sportsman to a ravaging beast.

Transformation towards Black Series will see a boost in performance of the 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 up to 680hp – that's 76hp more than the standard SL 65 AMG Roadster and approximately 30hp more than the Mercedes-McLaren SLR 722. According to Autoweek, an insider close to the development stated that engineers could have easily extracted 720hp out of this engine without any major modifications but decided it cap it.

The body gets trimmed down with the use of carbon fiber hood, fenders and roof which is fixed to the body. Removing the foldable roof and all of its associated hardware alleviates much dead weight and improves structural rigidity.

Suspension loses the heavy electro-hydraulic Active Body Control dampener units and instead receive adjustable coilover spring/dampeners. Naturally, carbon ceramic brake disks will be used with lightweight forged alloy one-piece wheels wrapped in 265/35ZR-19 (front), 325/30ZR-20 (rear) Dunlop Maxx GT tires.

Capable of 220 mph but electronically limited to 186 mph (300 km/h), 0-60 mph should arrives in less than 4.0 seconds.

Only 350 units will be sold worldwide with deliveries commencing in 2009.

Will it debut in german GP?

Most definitely yes. Can't launch a car of that caliber in a better way, especially when you've got an F1 team with a highly marketable driver.

WOW, this car is capable of 220MPH, thats crazy!

Why on earth would thay cap it off at 186. We can get that with a delimited S65.

crazy car! look at those wheel arches, wheels are probably 21"

Well the people who delimited cars also have to make a living don't they :D

It will be fast that's for sure but how will it look like and more important how will it handle???? It looks real wide, and about the wheels 21" ?????? I don't think so, 19 I guess...

Wheels are 19 in the front and 20 in the rear.
It is not going to be long when AMG will offer the wink-wink-type upgrade to the ful 720 horses and the 225 mph to its "loyal" customers. All these numbers become academical anyway, at this performance level.
The front wheel arches look positively scary.

Can it beat the Nissan GTR around N-ring?

Unfortunately no, the SL Black is not going to beat the GT-R around the Nurburgring. The GT-R's superfast laptime at the Nurburgring is mainly due to its handling and cornering prowess. The Nissan ATTESA 4WD and the 50/50 weight distribution allows the GT-R to achieve quite amazing turn-in speed (for a 1,750kg car) and ultrafast mid-corner and exit speeds. The transaxle and tricky differential played an important part. Also the GT-R wears some serious sticky tyres.
