Land Rover LXR Concept: Compact Off-Roader Set For Detroit Debut

During the 2007 Frankfurt Show in September, Land Rover released a mysterious sketch of a SUV-shaped, two-door vehicle, without however giving us any details at all. Thanks to one of our dedicated readers though, we now have the first official image of Land Rover’s compact SUV. According to Jay, the concept is called LXR, and it will make its debut at the 2008 Detroit Show in January.

We contacted a few sources of ours, and from the looks of it, the LXR will form the base of a subcompact version of the Freelander. As Jay told us in the e-mail he sent us, the production version of the LXR should be launched sometime in 2011.

A compact RR Sport replica priced below the Freelander?

Re: Land Rover LXR Concept @ 2008 NAIAS

No, with looks like that it has to be a premium product. I'm thinking SUV Coupe for base model Disco money.

... and it looks Mucking Afazing!

The Land Rover group have got the Cool + SUV formula sorted like no one else out there. If only their reputation for consumer satisfaction (i.e. the lack thereof) didn't continue to haunt them - without this monkey-on-the-back, maybe then Ford would be wise to hang on to this iconic brand.

I think what is going to happen is that Ford is going to regret selling both LR and Jaguar. Both appear to be on the verge of really getting themselves together. I have never seen such a mis-managed group of great brands. VW and BMW do it right, but Ford it seems was really cluless as to what to do with any of their premium brands. Aston is in the best shape it has been in years and they sell it, and I bet the same thing will happen with LR and Jag.

Exactly.

Ford's PAG division was one of best automotive premium brand portfolio:

Volvo: entry premium cars ... competing with Infiniti, Acura, Alfa Romeo, and entry models of BMW, MB, Audi, Lexus

Jaguar:
premium cars ... competing with mid & high-end cars of BMW, MB, Audi, Lexus

Aston Martin
: premium sports performance cars ... competing with Porsche, entry Bentley coupes, MB & BMW high-end coupes

Land Rover
: premium SUV / crossover cars ... competing with other premium SAV/SUVs of BMW, MB, Lexus, Infiniti, Audi etc

Lincoln: modern high-end luxury cars (limos) ... competing with entry Maybach, entry Bentley, high-end MB

Daimler (Ford owns the brand, and could revive it): traditional ultra-luxury coach built cars ... to compete with RR & high-end Bentley models)

The other brilliant premium portfolios are the ones by PAH:

Audi: premium cars (from entry to high-end)

Porsche: premium sports performance cars

Bentley: high-end luxury & sports cars

Lamborghini:
super-performance exotic cars

Bugatti:
ultra-luxury coach built cars (instead of this hillarious Veyron)

The one by Fiat:

Alfa Romeo: entry premium cars

Lancia: premium cars

Maserati: high-end luxury cars

Ferrari:
super performance exotic cars

The portfolios of MB (smart, Mercedes-Benz, Maybach) and of BMW (Mini, BMW, Rolls-Royce) are also very good, but perhaps they both lack super performance brands (eg. McLaren brand would be perfect for MB).

Re: Land Rover LXR Concept @ 2008 NAIAS

Whoahaha, X6 suddenly got some competition :eyebulge6

Don't be so sure ... BMW thought RR Stormer Concept would be the real X6 rival, but RR then offered a production version in the shape of vanilla RR Sport:

:t-crazy2:

So, I doubt the production version of LXR will look any similar to the concpet. Expect production version to be toned down heavily.

Re: Land Rover LXR Concept @ 2008 NAIAS

From what I have read the LXR will be a cheap SUV like the Santa Fee or RAV4. I hope it replaces the dull looking freelander.

Correct.

LXR is 4.35m long, 1.55m high ... so, similar dimensions to the upcoming BMW X1 (and I guess Audi Q3 & MB BLK / MLK as well).

This concept showcases baby LR ... not the X6 rival. :usa7uh:

Re: Land Rover LXR Concept @ 2008 NAIAS

Not exciting, the production car will be a bore.

I tend to agree, when i saw the Range Rover sport Concept, i expected to see something really breathtaking, but the final car, although very nice, was simply a more sporty version of the Range.

Re: Land Rover LXR Concept @ 2008 NAIAS

Still though if it looks anything like that and is priced below the Freelander Land Rover is going to have a hit. Even if it is priced like the Freelander. This is a baby, baby version of the Range Rover. I like it.

Re: Land Rover LXR Concept @ 2008 NAIAS

I like the Stromer more. This one reminds me of a coupe version of the Ford edge for some reason.

Re: Land Rover LXR Concept @ 2008 NAIAS

From car news: Land Rover LRX Leaked Again

Even though Land Rover has sent out numerous friendly head crushing threats to most car sites, German print magazine Auto Motor und Sport editors seem to have not received the memo yet and released the full press release and all images six days before the 18 Dec embargo lift.

So what is new for the Land Rover Coupe SUV a la BMW X6. The SUV measures 4,35 m in length and 1,55 m in height, that is 7 cm shorter and 12 cm lower than the Freelander body on which it is based. The motorshow concept will ride on 20 inch wheels and have just 13 cm of ground clearance.
The LRX shows some very strong lines with the long doors, steeply rising waistline and sloping roof line. Passengers will have quite a view from the SUV Coupe with a glass roof.

Inside the concept you will find plenty of two-tone leather and polished aluminium, four individual seats, an extended center console and a fridge. The cockpit features two touch-screens and only few switches, of which the 4wd drive control is most prominent.

Should the LRX make it into production than it would be no earlier than 2009. Interesting detail here is that the Land Rover LRX will be based on the Ford Focus platform, with the possiblity of a hybrid version.

Stay tuned for full details from the 2008 Detroit Motor Show.

This I have to see. I like Land Rover for their Range Rover Supercharged, so I will give them the benefit of the doubt. BUT a competitor to the X6? It's a bit stretching, just b/c it's a crossover doesn't mean it can compete--

Re: Land Rover LXR Concept @ 2008 NAIAS

My god this is a beautiful machine. I don't know if this thing is X6's direct competitor but I'd take this over the X6 any day of the week.

Re: Land Rover LXR Concept @ 2008 NAIAS

Duh - Range Stormer was a concept. It was shown to preview styling elements that would be seen on future Range Rover models.

The Range Sport doesn't have a competitor that matches its blend of style, luxury, forecourt cachet and off-road ability.

The new Freelander is a fabulous effort - not overdone whilst still managing to look thoroughly up-to-date in the current Land Rover idiom.

This new concept (and let's judge it for what it is - a concept car) is another spectacular design from the Land Rover group. Pity their future is so uncertain...

Jaguar Land Rover
