First Look: Hyundai Concept Genesis Coupe

Here are the first official sketches of the Hyundai Concept Genesis Coupe which will be making its world debut at the upcoming Los Angeles Motor Show in a couple of weeks. No further information has been releases at this time, although we do know this concept hints at the future design direction for rear-wheel drive sports coupe.

Hyundai’s new coupe caught uncovered

Hyundai’s new Genesis coupe has been caught uncovered at a market research event sitting next to its toughest competitor, the Ford Mustang. The car was photographed by someone at the event, however nobody has claimed responsibility for the pictures, which turned up on an online forum. The final production version is expected to debut late next year as a 2009 model but a near-production concept version will be unveiled at next month’s Los Angeles Auto Show.

The new car will replace the current FWD Tiburon coupe but will feature a much more powerful V6 engine and possibly the new ‘Tau’ V8 powerplant for a flagship model. Rumors suggest a 2.0L Turbo engine with 215hp and 217ft.lb of torque will get an incredibly good price of $19,900, while a 3.8L V6 with 300hp and 280ft.lb would be priced higher at $25,990. It’s also suggested the car would get a limited slip diff and optional Brembo brakes.

As you can tell from the aggressive styling, Hyundai is clearly looking to succeed with this coupe where the Tiburon could not. As a company looking to move up in the world, Hyundai is doing a great job styling its new products such as this and the upcoming large Genesis sedan. It’s still likely, however, that Hyundai will use a different badge for the new coupe, just as it did with the Tiburon.

Looks alright, need to see more pictures. Not sure about the head lights though.

Re: Hyundai’s new coupe caught uncovered

Looks pretty good, but like you say we need more pictures. I'm just excited that it may eventually get a V8, but still a 300hp V6 in a stylish, rwd sports coupe for 26K is awesome. That side kink might be a little bit much, but we'll see.

Looks pretty good actually.

I spot traces of Toyota Solara, Pontiac G6 and call me crazy, but Jaguar XK.

There is definitely some Altima coupe in the rear also.

Or how about just traces of the new Hyundai, like we have seen in some of their newer cars.

Aw Jeez... they really cocked up the side DLO with that daft quarter window scalloped into the door panel. In their quest to distinguish this otherwise generic coupé from others, Hyundai have ended up spoiling what is otherwise a pretty and inoffensive shape.

Why mess with a proven Tiburon formula Hyundai? Once more, simply copy the 599 and Bob's your uncle!

Oh snap. I didn't even notice the swooping window, disgusting.

I would say that for a Korean make this is mildly hot.

^^ I love the marketing gimmick... saying the car has better rigidity then then an M3... of course they slip in that's better then a E46 M3.

Wow Hyundai is amazing, they can make a concept car (not even a production model) that is more rigid then an 8-year BMW. WOW!

<sarcasm> WOW Kudos Hyundai! You're the best! </sarcasm>

You guys are gonna have to lay off Hyundai. Considering the absolute junk they used to make not more than 5 or 6 years ago this car is awesome. RWD with some useable hp. Did I mention that it is RWD? Cut'em some slack.

“When it hits the market in early 2009, we aim to deliver a driving experience that challenges cars like Infiniti G37, at prices more like Mitsubishi Eclipse.” A bold claim from a company that seems hell bent on bringing a new crossover vehicle to market every couple of months.

Although the car shown today at the 2007 LA Auto show was nothing more than a shell, Hyundai product chief John Krafcik made some big promises to back up Hyundai’s claim. He glossed right over the turbocharged four-cylinder engine that’s expected to power base models and went right to the top-of-the-line 3.8-liter V6. “We plan to offer the most affordable 300-hp coupe on the market,” Krafcik boasted.

The all-aluminum engine will also have more than 250 pound-feet of torque and continuously variable valve timing. Hyundai also said that the new rear-wheel-drive coupe will go from zero to 60 in less than 6 seconds. Other notable performance parts include a six-speed manual transmission, Brembo brakes and a limited-slip differential.

This coupe is often described as Hyundai’s Mustang, and its dimensions are pretty close to Ford’s pony car. Both cars are the same height, but the Hyundai is nearly an inch wider and 4 inches shorter in overall length. The wheels on the Hyundai must be pushed to the corners, however, as it rides on a wheelbase that's 4 inches longer than the Mustang.

If a big rear-wheel-drive coupe with 300 hp doesn’t interest you for some reason, Krafcik told the audience that Hyundai is also working on a smaller, front-wheel-drive replacement for the current Tiburon. He said to look to the Veloster concept for an idea of what the company has in mind. – Ed Hellwig, Senior Editor, Inside Line

I do agree Hyundai has come a long way with this car, the design of the car, and the quality of fit and finish are very impressive. It can definitely mix it with the best from Japan, such as the 350z. It is certainly better than what Toyota is giving us now so full credit to Hyundai for developing its own RWD chassis, and making the car while other Jap manufacturers are still stuck with their FWD coupes or has abandon this segment all together.

As for my previous post, this colour scheme is very Hotwheels like.
