The Mercedes-Benz R-Class (W251) is a mid-size luxury MPV introduced by Mercedes-Benz in 2005 for the 2006 model year. The R-Class shared its platform with the M-Class (W164) and GL-Class (X164) and was available in two wheelbase lengths: standard 2,980 mm (117.3 in) and long 3,215 mm (126.6 in).

Funny, it never really affects me in any way if they blow up or in other way destroy a car in a movie regardless of the make of the car. For safety reasons the cars that get destroyed in movies and TV-series' are probably never regular production models but more like special mules with a genuine-looking shell.

I can't stand Alarm für Cobra 11. I've watched a few episodes and there are always cars being crashed: it's getting old and boring. Furthermore most cars being crashed are older cars hinting at the producers being to cheap to buy new cars and trashing them.
Let's see, the two cops always drive a BMW 3-Series or a Mercedes W210 E-Class in almost every episode while the bad guy(s) usually drive some really old VW or Opel from the 1980s. Every episode is literally the same. Zzzzz...

Man... I feel bad for the gorgeous machine, the E-38! Just like I did in the old Bond's 007 movie!
But in the Bond movie, they destroyed it with style
…and didn't let it explode… 
…and here you also know that it is a cheap used car and that this is the reason for using it here!!

Ah but Alarm für Cobra 11. is less on acting quality and more about automotive violence think poor renditions such as the supremely ridiculous Transporter series and you get the idea of why they are so bad and popular at the same time.
As for trashing the auto? Well I presume everybody not just BMW crush and recycle their hard driven prototypes so those Z4 you see today and the 7er's you saw yesterday will be eventually crushed,
But in Germany film and television companies to buy these prototypes simply for the purpose of drivel like Alarm für Cobra 11.
I think the reason why they use older cars is simply because if they used new cars that is probably the whole seasons budget gone in one episode.
