Mercedes-Benz Car Group once again scoops a clutch of prizes at the 2011 GOOD DESIGNTM Awards.

Chicago -- No fewer than four Mercedes-Benz Car Group models have received the prestigious 2011 GOOD DESIGNTM Award: the Mercedes-Benz 2012 M-Class SUV, the Mercedes-Benz 2012 CLS Coupé, the Mercedes-Benz 2012 SLK Roadster and the Mercedes-Benz 2012 SLK AMG high performance roadster. The annual GOOD DESIGNTM Award ranks as the most celebrated international accolade in the field of product design – and this year once again honours the outstanding quality of Mercedes Benz Car Group's Design.

The world’s oldest and most esteemed design prize was founded in 1950 in Chicago by the architects Eero Saarinen, Charles and Ray Eames, and Edgar Kaufmann Jr. is awarded by the Chicago Athenaeum and the European Centre for Architecture, Art Design and Urban Studies. For more than 60 years now, this coveted accolade has recognised exceptionally innovative and visionary products, concepts and ideas that go beyond the regular horizons of everyday product design. The aim of the award, not least of all, is to raise public awareness of contemporary design together with related issues of sustainability.

The prize is awarded based on the criteria of functionality and aesthetics as originally laid down by Saarinen and Eames, and is now complemented by an ecological aspect that stipulates sustainable design in keeping with our times. 2011 saw the independent jury of design experts and architects sifting through a record number of applications from around the world to decide their final selection of more than 500 product designs and graphics from 38 countries that were deemed worthy of the GOOD DESIGN Award.

"iF product design award 2012": Five-fold success for Mercedes-Benz design

Stuttgart – The designers at Mercedes-Benz have picked up yet another prize for no fewer than four models in the form of the internationally renowned "iF product design award 2012". A top-class specialist jury has bestowed the award on the Mercedes-Benz M-Class, the SLK, the SLS AMG Roadster, and the Concept A-CLASS show car, as well as the smart electric mobility concept, all for their outstanding designs.

First presented in 1953, the "iF product design award" ranks among the world's most important design awards and represents the seal of approval for good design. For 2012 the 24-member jury was again faced with the task of choosing its favourites, this time from more than 2000 candidates. Four models from Mercedes-Benz stood out in particular: the M-Class, the SLK, the SLS AMG Roadster and the Concept A-CLASS show car.

The M-Class won thanks to its characteristically distinctive SUV design and its variable interior with high wellness factor. The open-top SLS AMG Roadster, meanwhile, owes its victory to its exciting lines, which are reminiscent of the legendary 300 SL from the 1950s. The SLK Roadster also dominated the competition with its powerful sports car design, which portrays its outstanding qualities to brilliant visual effect - stylish comfort, light-footed sportiness and exemplary ecology.

With the Mercedes-Benz Concept A-CLASS, the jury acknowledged the birth of a new vehicle generation which provides a glimpse of the expressive design of the future A-Class.

As an overall concept, the trend-setting developments achieved by the automotive brand smart in the field of electric mobility also received the coveted "iF product design award 2012". For its innovative e-mobility concept, smart created one-off vehicles such as the open-top smart forspeed, the smart e-scooter and also the smart e-bike, which is to be incorporated into the smart product line this year.

The Concept A-Class interior by Mercedes-Benz took first place in the Interior area of the Concept & Study category. Bionic cell structures, echoes of aircraft design, an operating concept with fully integrated smartphone and unique and revolutionary graphic design featuring three-dimensional, dynamically growing glass elements provide a foretaste of a new generation of the A-Class.

The "Best of Best" title in the Exterior category saw the new generation of the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class following in the footsteps of its predecessor, which has long enjoyed international renown as a design icon. The new CLS combines an elegant coupé silhouette with an expressive front. Its dynamic, athletic figure features a beguiling composition of lines and surfaces and a dropping line, drawing on the uniquely rich fund of design treasures to be found in historical Mercedes sports cars to embody a contemporary aesthetic statement.

German Design Council

The Automotive Brand Contest is the first international brand and design competition for the automotive industry. It was launched by the German Design Council, which was established as a foundation by decree of the German Bundestag back in 1953. The independent institution organises this competition dedicated exclusively to the automotive sector in order to acknowledge outstanding achievements in brand management, brand communication and design. In this way, the internationally reputed German Design Council highlights the great importance of design and brand image to the success of an automotive company.

Finally some recognition for the dropping line..its lovely imo..
Makes the car stand out like nothing else on the road..and gives the car a leaping forward sensation like a Jaguar ( not the car the animal)

I just can't agree with that. The CLS has one of the worst executed dropping lines I've ever seen. Just because it drops doesn't make it interesting or unique, it has to blend and mend right. I guess some think it does and some think it doesn't.

Too bussy and laboured, to my personal taste. I'm repetitive with this: did the clay modell got crashed by some object and they like the way it looked, or they had too much Red Bull while designing it?

I'm not a fan of CLS either and compare it to A7 it just looks wrong. I even prefer E-class over CLS.

Dunno, the A7 is not cup of my tea either... that side profile always reminds me of:

Looks like CLS to me. One of the problems with CLS is that it looks like rear is going to fall to the ground anytime. Direct view from rear is a disaster.

Oddly enough, I think the direct rear of the CLS is absolutely GORGEOUS, and best on the M-B lot. However, SO many people hate the rear? I hated the first CLS's rear. The CLS's front I think looks amazing from far, and pretty nice up close (super blunt and clearly EU regulated when you get up close, not as dynamic and definitely not as elegant as you'd wish, however, from far, extremely dynamic), and the side profile is a drunken disaster IMO. Greenhouse is great, but the details are a joke. At least if they wanted to get creative, implement it RIGHT! I still like the car overall though I guess, just not in my "elite/future classic lineup" for Mercedes, and not a design that I fully agree with or find "right".

The A7 I've seen several times on the road now, and IMO aside from the first couple of times, the car lacks a presence and the rear brings it down big time. Just not a special looking design, IMO, although it does have its moments where it shines bright. Although I respect its clean design idiom (details wise, NOT architecture wise), the CLS reigns supreme over it, even with the coke-party side profile. :D
