New design theme, something has changed

Hey folks, I´ve got good news. It seems we are an important forum here at the internet. Mercedes-Benz seems to have ditched the broken shoulder lines for the new models. I´m sure this is what is going to happen because Autobild, a true reliable source when it comes to new MB cars, has updated their impressions for the new C-Class, and you can see how the profile of the new car is much more organic, and forgets about the broken shoulder line.

What is bothers me is that, with the door handles in the shoulder line, the car seems a BMW from the profile.

PS: Go to the autobild.de main page and click on the red C-Class.

Are u serious? This is just current C-class mixed with f800 in photoshop.

The profile was different a few months ago, if they have chaned it I guess it´s because MB has changed its mind.

I love the silver ones they are hot hot hot both front and rear the rear is great.Lets hope a nice interior with this i could be brilliant.

New design theme confirmed. :usa7uh:

New Design

[google translated from German]

From their typical design, the Mercedes will apparently adopt. For new models to a modified design language containing the word: the cars stand out in future by a long bonnet, short rear end, and sharp from the body-fitted wheels.

The CLS is an example of the new design language of Mercedes: long hood, no wheel position.

"We want to be on the athletic proportions, surfaces and lines, not brute force, but stylish - like the CLS, " said Advanced Design Chief Steffen Köhl the magazine "auto motor und sport". In the current issue he describes, together with Daimler-design Gorden Wagener, the new form language, the first representative of the C-class coupe will be coming to market in 2014. 2015 followed by the E-Class.

"Brachial is out"

And the new design language applies to the C-Class and E-and S-class vehicles. Besides its long hood and a flowing silhouette zugepfeilt should be short and strong with future star cars, the front overhang and big wheels are fitted flush. From outboard wheel arches do say goodbye to the Stuttgart and lift the shoulder line of cars in the rear end considerably. The Mercedes models are to be staged in style-conscious. Brutal forms, the designers have, out.

^So this starts with what car the 2014 C class coupe?
Isnt the C class coupe coming next year?

Or are they talking about the new E and C classes.. wich means the coming S class will be before the new design lingo..

Im confused

Kind of confusing/conflicting to me, too.

They say the CLS is the first to use this new design language, but then they say the next C Coupe will, followed by the E? Which would interestingly mean that the S is no longer the bearer of new design language.

IMO, the CLS is very much a family member of the E's evolving of the styling language introduced by the W221.

We'll see.

A new design them which does not start with the brand new W222 S-Class just for 2 years? That would suck.

At Mercedes it takes roughly 5 years from idea to production. While the new CLS is more stylish, and points in the direction, it doesn't yet fully represent the new theme. Earlier this year Gorden Wagener alluded to the new philosophy of the future they are working on in an interview. ;)

Gorden Wagener, Head of Mercedes-Benz design, Technicity

Let’s conclude by taking a short backward look and giving a preview of the future.

The backward look won’t be very easy, because in the past 18 months — that is, since I became Head of Design at Mercedes-Benz — we’ve successfully launched more than 13 models. We’ve received very positive feedback on them, and we’ve also modified our organizational structures in the design area to meet the challenges of the future. For example, we’ve established centers of expertise and opened a design studio in China. At the moment we’re working on our design philosophy of the future. We’ve already given the public an initial glimpse of it through our design sculpture in Detroit and the F 800 Style research vehicle. As you can see, this work will continue to be exciting for me and my team!

Daimler Technicity | Interview with Gorden Wagener

Interesting quote:

"Mr. Wagener, when was the last time you looked at a well-designed object that was not a a car and thought to yourself “Wow, that’s a great design”?

My favorite gadget is the iPhone. It’s got a simple design and it feels high-quality. But the really revolutionary thing about it is the graphics. And graphics are becoming increasingly important for product design, in cars as well. Apple has developed a corporate and product design that is much clearer and easier to grasp than those of its competitors. Nowadays, clear and simple design also implies luxury. Mercedes-Benz also has this kind of strong corporate identity."

With M-B designs getting more and more complex (on the current design language, the complexity really peaked with the W212 E-Class, and the CLS is more fussy than that), I wonder if he feels this "simple and clean" look applies to current models?

Also, he said Japan is where he feels the most intriguing designs are coming from. Let's hope he doesn't mean cars, and doesn't apply that to his German employer. :D

Mercedes-Benz has a design office is Yokohama, which opened in 1993 under Bruno Sacco's direction. Yokohama contributed e.g. to the Maybach and current S-Class. In the future Mercedes new design studio in Beijing might take over, unless Yokohama continues to make valuable contributions. :usa7uh:

Mercedes-Benz Sculpture Experiments

There are some fascinating design shifts happening at Mercedes-Benz ~ from the design studio in Sindelfingen to Como to Tokyo to Carlsbad, the message was clear - the hunt is on for “Perfect Aesthetics” and in doing so, they are aggressively pushing their designs to be more fresh, young, emotional, and sexy ~ phrases like “enjoyment of innovation” + “inspire our customers” + “sensuality and joy” + “importance of perception” kept recurring in addition to talk of the future and fascination and playfulness.

It was most definitely a buzzwordfest, but the excitement and passion of the design teams was impossible to ignore. There was an inescapable giddiness throughout the week around where the future may take us, and a need to think far beyond their more traditional production vehicles. Steffen Kohl’s gung ho push from the design side to gain the freedom to explore the insane ideas are guaranteed to frighten corporate types a bit.

It’s inspiring to see his team indulge in the ideas designers dream about as students ~ you know, that awesomely idealistic time when you believe absolutely anything is possible?

A big part of this is the fight to create more artistic explorations through sculpture to push abstract concepts. The idea of art being key to Mercedes-Benz design strategies as well as a beautiful way to tease designs earlier in the year is intriguing. And i love these form studies of Oliver Samson, Thomas Stopka,Yves Renaud, and Sylvain Wehnert from Karim Habib’s team. Exploring lightweight forms to play with strength, perspective, and transparency, the results resemble polygons, honeycombs (all sharing one central perspective point), string art, and woven chaos. See them all on the next page!

They could have summarized that press release , by saying " we are going BMW " :D

I concur Mo. MB are working hard on marketing their design studio in order to attract young talent and convince people that MB is a cool and hip company, though I don't see any fixed gear bikes in the photos:D

Mercedes-Benz Interiors Become Works of Art

At the 2011 North American International Detroit Auto Show, Mercedes-Benz not only captures visitors’ attention
with fascinating automobiles and technical innovations, but enthrals with an art object as well. Interior Design at
Mercedes-Benz in Germany has created a sculpture that expresses visually that which inspires designers, and on
the other hand gives space to the creative artistic process in the design of the vehicle interior. It makes an
aesthetics of sustainability visible and is oriented towards the perfect forms of nature which evolved over periods
spanning millions of years.
