World's oldest man turns 112

TOKYO (AFP) - The world's oldest man celebrated his 112th birthday Tuesday with a healthy Japanese breakfast of rice, miso soup and seaweed, saying he wanted to live forever.

Tomoji Tanabe, who has been the world's oldest man since January this year, lives with his son and family in Japan's southern prefecture of Miyazaki. He keeps a diary and reads the newspaper every day.

"I want to live indefinitely. I don't want to die," he said as he marked his birthday, Kyodo News reported.

Tanabe, a teetotaller who has repeatedly said that avoiding alcohol is a secret of his longevity, was given a certificate from the Guinness Book of World Records by the mayor of his local municipality in June.

Japan has the largest population of centenarians in the world. The number of Japanese aged at least 100 years old is expected to top 30,000 by the end of September, the health ministry said in a recent report.

The Japanese people's renowned longevity is often attributed to eating the country's traditional healthy food, despite the hectic lifestyle many lead in the big cities.

But the longevity is also presenting a headache as the country has one of the lowest birthrates, raising fears of a future demographic crisis as a smaller pool of workers supports a mass of elderly.

Really cool. It's alwasy good to hear about people living a long time. My great grandpa was 106 when he died in 1996.

So my great grandpa had seen his son's son's son's son by the time he died...crazy!

...this is interesting. i would've figured the stress from work pressures in that country would really have an effect on longevity, but i guess not. maybe this is positively correlated with them depleting deep sea fish stocks for food consumption :t-hands:

Gosh, this bad news. If there is one thing that i certainly don't avoid, it is alcohol (i'm not alcoholic though)...

Alcohol in moderate amounts is healthy. I read somewhere that a bit of alcohol is actually good for your veins and digestion. So after I eat, I usually have a shot glass of Italian lemoncello, at least once or thrice a week. :usa7uh:

My father is 66 years old and in perfect health - and he drinks at least 2-3 beers a day. Alcohol ain't so bad, in moderate amounts.

Of course, being a former college student I know what you guys are talking about. :D

You're right Chris. Alcohol up to a certain limit does no harm to your health. I usually drink 2-3 beers a day and my stomach and co. are in great shape! About my "whiskey addiction" i will only have 4-5 glasses per week...

About wine, only when it suits the food. I have found some excellent greek wines and i also like the one that my father makes!

Other than that, i don't like to get drunk... But every now and then, it's not that bad :D
