Hmm...Really tough between the two...but I have to choose...
Front End- Both cars have interesting front styling, but it's safe to say that MB went the angular way while BMW took the subtle road. One key difference, and most people will not agree with me, is that the BMW doesn't totally look like a midsize luxury car, while the E does. The new 5 series, IMO looks like a big 3 series, but a good one at that. Simply, the E-Class looks more expensive than the 5 series...What's more, the 5er's styling left me wanting. The headlamps are too thin, and the grill could be bigger. This pic says it all.
Winner: E-Class
Side Profile-From the side, the 5er has a much smoother profile than the angular E. The outline looks organic, while the E's looks more solid. What really makes the 5er's side profile a winner is it's simplicity. The E has a lot going on- the flared fenders, etc. The 5er, however, is simple and beautiful from the side.
Winner: 5 Series
Rear- The E-Class has a very boring rear, but it looks powerful and classy. On the other hand, the 5er certainly has the more interesting of the rumps, but it looks awkward from some angles.
Winner: TIE
Interior- This is where the E-Class wins big. Both interiors are beautiful, and well appointed, but I feel like the E class has the more unique and interesting of the two. The 5er's "copy and paste" interior would've moved me a year ago, but we've seen similar interiors on many BMWs...The E's is simply more interesting...
Winner: E-Class
Overall, both of these cars will be class leaders. They offer the best in performance (BMW), the best in Safety (MB) and the best in Luxury(Both). It really comes down to your preference- neither one is the hands down winner... Still, for me, the E-Class's great front and it's fabulous interior is just perfect...I'll vote for the E.
The real loser here is the A6... looks 10 years old compared to the others.
