Vs Autocar: BMW 135i vs 350Z vs S3 vs Cayman

If you want a true sportcar, defintly Cayman, but if you need four seats then Cayman is toasted :D Performance wise the 135i offer a lot for the money. I'm looking forward to the lighter 135Tii :eusa_danc

dayum the front of the 1 series looks so butt ugly! I love how they gave the rear of the car a CSL-ish bootlid.

btw Andreas, has the 135tii been approved for production?

The cayman wiped the floor with everyonbe else, definitely my choice followed by the Audi then others.

Neither the 135i and S3 are people carriers either.

Compare to a Cayman they are, 4 people are doomed in a Cayman. I did not say the others are limosines so of course to a 5-series, they are doomed as well.
I dont see Porsche and BMW aiming for the same customers, there is the Z4 for others if they want a Cayman wannabe.

Quite frankly, I think the Audi TT 3.2 would have made a much better match for the other three in this comparison. And if it where here, it'd undoubtedly be my choice.

The S3 is more suited against the 135i hatch, is it not?

I dont know, I can see myself choosing between a S3 and a 135i Coupe. I cant see myself choosing between a 135i, TT and Cayman. If Im after a TT I dont need a big car or unnecessary place, I just want a roadster. So if I want a Roadster, its between Z4, TT and SLK.
Of course there are people cross shopping between a TT and a 1er Coupe but I dont think they are lots of them. To me its more natural to compare S3 to 1er.
Lets not forget that 135i doesnt exist as a Hatchback version, only the Coupe. 130i Hatchback exist though.

Silly me, I had always thought there was a 135i hatch. Doh. :eusa_doh:

I see what you're saying though. Although, I still stand by my opinion that the TT 3.2 Coupe is better suited against these three.

I'm thinking more from an aesthetic point of view, mind you. Where as the 350Z, Cayman and 350Z are all coupes, I feel that the S3 is most certainly a hatch back and thus more fitting against a 130i hatch.

Yep, but I cant agree with you Bruce :) Its the Z4 Roadster or Z4 Coupe that makes more sense in my eyes. I also think 135i Coupe competes with 335i or 1er Hatchback.
I can see myself driving 135i Coupé next time I change a car, not a Z4 or a TT. If I had two cars a TT or Z4 makes sense but not if I only can afford one car and thats the car Im going to live with for some time.

Anyway lets agree to disagree :t-cheers:

Raading through the article again I can't help but thinking that BMW has done a very good job in creating the runner up in the 1-series hierarchy (I get the same feeling about the M3 in the 3-series but to a lesser extent). Judging from what Car has to say it is obvious what will be changed when the range-topper, whether it will be called Tii or not, is presented.

And again, great job in the comparison against the Cayman. No doubt I too would choose the Cayman but then again, that is a Porsche and the BMW is just an ordinary BMW.

The BMW is too ugly and too expensive for what it is. I'll take all of the other cars before it. They should have included a evo in this comparison imho. It would have been the best all rounder :D

If it was the Cayman S, definitely. Not so sure about the Cayman, it is too underpowered for a Porsche and then there is the $50K price tag.

Not surprising at all that Cayman wiped the floor with both of the others. Like I said in another post, if I need something fun and not all that practical there are more choices than just the 135, but If I need something hardcore once again, there are more choices than the 135.

I'm not knocking the 135, it's just that I feel it offers nothing special. But I'll reserve my final opinion when I get to drive it myself.

Not here in Sweden for that price you dont have many options, good for you that you live in US were all cars cost the same ;)
