F1 braced for BMW exit announcement

BMW, 2009BMW's future in Formula 1 is in serious doubt amid mounting speculation that the German car manufacturer will announce its withdrawal from the sport at the end of this season, on Wednesday.

An emergency press conference has been called at BMW's headquarters in Munich, where it is suggested that the car company may reveal that it has decided to end its involvement in F1.

The invite to the press conference said it had been called because of 'current developments in motor sport.'

The press conference will be hosted by Dr. Norbert Reithofer, the chairman of the BMW board, Dr. Klaus Draeger, the director for development, and Mario Theissen, BMW motorsport director. The presence of such senior management figures suggests that the announcement will be very significant.

Officials at BMW refused to comment about what the press conference was about, but they did confirm that it was 'important' news.

It will be funny if someone buys the team and turns it around like Honda-Brawn saga. May be Peter Sauber will come back. Anyway I won't be surprised, spending millions to be in the back doesn't make sense especially now. Pity they didn't fight harder for the championship last year when they had an outside chance.
 
BMW will loose a lot of credibility, at least in my eyes, if this turn out to be true.
 
it's been over two years, but i watched the hungrian grand prix a couple of days ago.
i found a incessant dribble and squabbling over some idiotic simple minded rules, racing defined by who would go to the pitstop first so the others would end up behind him, cars that are bound by so much regulation they almost all perform the same, the only difference being in who could make the tech work and not explode.
i found a two hour long bore, with absolutely nothing interesting, hell right now the crashes are the most exciting part, and i really hate myself for saying that.
if i were any self respecting team now, i would quit, f... bernie and max and their idiotic regulations.
bringing back the old formula one i enjoyed watching 5 years ago now is a quasi impossibility but there is so much room for maneuvering, imagine the things that can be done.

well i know one thing for sure, i will never again be tempted to waist 2 or so hours on a sunday.
 
Even with Toyota's successes this year (compared to previous years), are rumours still circulating that they too will exit Formula 1 ?

So what are the reasons for BMW's exit? Is it primarily because of the economy, or the poor performance this year, or the dissatisfaction with how F1 is being run? ... or something else ?
 
i am getting a feeling F1 as we know it, is over. maybe it is over period.

we'll see about it.

well for the better, there is no room in a hypocritical "green" world for something as humanly mechanistic as F1. let bernie and max go organise a new F1 with modified hybrid porsche cayennes, maybe it would be more to their liking.

Bernie and Max banned the KERS McLaren was working on in 2000/2001, they also banned a proposed switch to turbos in late 90s, besides eCVTs in 1993.

Hypocritical "green" is right .
 
I was just about to say that I won't be surprised if they're the only one. Doesn't make sense to pour this type of money into motorsports right now.

He said WE will not be the ONLY car manufacturer (very prophetic as you point out), so he must mean BMW (you know AKA BMW/SCOTT) as well.

But we should watch and learn, don't not let the eyelids close now students!;)

Yep. I hear you. I'm not sure if that was supposed to be a conscious statement or if it slipped. But seeing as there is a editing feature, I think it was for real.

As a marketing student who wants to work in the automotive industry, especially German, I'm paying attention alright. ;)
 
I hope BMW are leaving, they are doing bad. Save the money and build M3 CSL and real sportscars instead. F1 its just a waste of money.
 
BMW leaving F! is vey very bad news both for F! and for BMW..

I am not a BMW fan but it was nice watching them in races and i always thaught they would get up their and challenge MERCMAC and FERARRI..

I think BMW should hang in their and not yet quit...THey could yet turn it around....
 
If they quit now, which is now official BTW and told on every german newspaper, they'll appear like loosers. Just like Honda.

They'll say of course it's because of the recent developments, because it's not "efficient dynamics" enough (despite they killing their KERS), but in fact everybody will know it's because it's their third year and they're still lagging behind...

It's quite a coward decision IMO. Quitting when you're that bad is a bit humiliating.
