W100 The Grand Mercedes 600 (W100)

The Mercedes-Benz 600 (factory code "W100") is a single-generation line of full-size ultra-luxury limousines and Pullman limousines, made by Daimler-Benz from 1963 through 1981. Nicknamed Der Grosser (Grand/Large Mercedes), succeeded the Type 300d "Adenauer" as the company's flagship model. It was positioned well above the subsequent 300-series in price, amenities, and status. It was mainly used by heads of states and Royalty. When launched in 1963, the Mercedes 600 was the most expensive car in the world. Its few competitors included British and American marques such as Rolls-Royce, Cadillac and Lincoln's top model lines. Though very costly, it's hydraulic mechanisms were ground breaking and has not been seen in any other car to this day. The Mercedes 600 still remains to be a very expensive car to own and maintain even today.
I wonder why they didn't use a Maybach instead of an S-Class. They did that in the movies.

Nice song.

I saw a blue 600 when I was in New York earlier this month. It was the first 600 I saw, so stunning. It was on Parklane Avenue I encountered it.

I prefer black. Humbly here is my W100 and W221.

Lovely 600. Simply stunning...

I will also get myself a few cones and a wide angle mirror for parking the MINI.

And you didn't take any pics? What is wrong with you? :D
What other cars did you see?

True man, I should have taken pictures but NY was so damn cold that taking my gloves off to fetch the camera in my bad was an agonising mission.:D Sadly 75% of all the cars on the roads were yellow and only occasionally did I an interesting car. Compared with London there wasn't too many cars to photograph but it might have been because of the weather. The 600 was major highlight though.

My favorite Antique Vehicle!
I had the pleasure to be in one of this amazing vehicle many times. It was the Pullman version and it was huge. It was the car of the president of Cyprus at 1960s and it is right now the most expensive vehicle in Cyprus.
Did you know that the windows and seats are not electric but hydraulic? And there is also a fridge in the rear passenger area!

An Amelia Island Pilgrimage for 1965 Mercedes Popemobile

Mercedes-Benz Museum:
Pope Paul VI in an undated photo, with the 1965 Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman landaulet.

The Amelia Island vintage car show and auction weekend, held annually on the northern Florida island, will receive an unlikely dignitary when the pomp begins on March 11.

A landaulet-style 1965 Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman limousine commissioned by Pope Paul VI will be displayed among a group of Mercedes 600 sedans during the concours. The limousine has never been to the United States, and it has only rarely been displayed outside of the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany, where it has been housed since 1985.

Mercedes Pullmans were the Maybach 62s of their day: powerful, exclusive, extended-wheelbase heavyweights that could be customized to suit the specifications of the customer, be he a dignitary or a despot. A 1965 Pullman, weighing 5,000 pounds and equipped with a 6.3-liter V-8, could move from a standstill to 62 m.p.h. in 10 seconds.

Far more elegant than the transparent bulletproof enclosures of pickup trucks and abbreviated G-Wagens of later pontiffs, Pope Paul VI’s limousine featured a rear seat that could be raised and lowered to allow the pope a view of the crowds from the car’s landaulet-style convertible roof. Extended rear doors, a slightly raised roof and an elevated floor were also part of the Vatican’s specifications.

The vehicle subsequently ferried Pope John Paul I and John Paul II to public engagements before it was retired in 1985 and sent to Stuttgart.
The Mercedes 600 sedan is a featured class at the concours, which lasts through March 13.

I had the pleasure of meeting a private owner at the 125th birthday party of Mercedes-Benz in Stuttgart. The owner is interested in a photoshoot.

In a sort of secretive underground project in the mid-1960s', M-Bs' then head of engine research and development, Erich Waxenberger, arranged to have examples of the 600s' 6.3L V8 planted into the engine bays of a W113 230 SL roadster and a W111 250SE coupe. According to accounts of the time, both cars were capable of cruising speeds well in excess of 230 km/h and top speeds of over 240 km/h. Note, this was in the mid-1960s' ! Especially the 6.3 V8 powered 250SE coupe was the original testing platform for the legendary 300 SEL 6.3 sedan. Alas, the original 250SE was scrapped as was the 230SL, although a replica of the 230SL was later reproduced several years ago.

There was an interesting and thoroughly entertaining article about these cars and Erich Waxenberger, who was apparently quite a hellraiser, in one of Germanys' classic automobile periodicals about one year ago.

Playboy bunny pops out of Mercedes limo at concours

The special Mercedes-Benz display at the 16th annual Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance in Florida brought out the saints and the rogues yesterday.

The saint: Apparently the mid-1960s Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman Landaulet built for the Pope, making its first U.S. appearance was a hit. It came from the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Germany.

The rogue: At the opposite end of the class spectrum, a model dressed as a Playbody bunny popped out of a 1972 Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman. The car was first owned by Hugh Hefner as his personal daily driver when his Playboy headquarters were still in Chicago. The Playboy Bunny exited the vehicle at the reviewing stand.

The Amelia Island Concours drew the rarest cars from more than 11 countries and attracted nearly 20,000 car lovers, the show's largest single-day attendance in its history.

M-100 Message Board - 600 Purchasing advice

Production of the 600 SWB started in August 1963 and the 600 LWB in September 1964.
The first customer was an American architect, who had placed the first order. When the
W116 S-Class was introduced in 1973, production dropped, and it dropped again when
the W126 S-Class started in 1980/81. The last 600 was built in June 1981.
