'Under discussion'

Porsche is considering a hotter version of the recently introduced 2014 Cayman.
Andreas Preuninger, chief engineer of the new 911 GT3 said Porsche is analyzing the prospects of a more hardcore version of the Cayman and he said testing for a track-focused variant has already been done but a final decision has not been taken yet.
Since the 911 GT3 is available exclusively with a PDK, Porsche could decide to offer a manual version for its more potent Cayman for those who want more control behind the wheel. It's not known whether it will receive the GT3 badge, GTS or something else but most likely there will be a more powerful version.

It would be nice, sure price would go up. But I doubt it will be real "GT3". By that I mean wide-body, GT3 engine with 475 PS, PDK and all other things, maybe except rear-wheel steering. I mean, who would by the 911 GT3 then other than race teams or "911" name fans?

With the previous generation Cayman, Porsche made a faster, lighter, meaner version called the Cayman R. It never because a cult car, but it was built out of necessity, because people really wanted that sort of car.

The reason Porsche didn't quite manage to make the "R" famous is because they got the branding wrong, because they got too caught up in the history books and ignored who their customers really are. You see, it was a 911 in 1967 called the 911 R that gave it its name. At the time, it was the lights and most special 911 you could buy. They almost never used the "R" name, so people forgot it, especially the younger buyers who actually bought Boxsters and Caymans.

Which brings us to our story of the day. Porsche has just launched the new 911 GT3, and although we didn't like the detached manner in which the normal 991 drives, this track car is an absolute monster. For these sort of reasons, the GT3 name is practically legendary when you're at a congregation if speed freaks. People just know it's almost as fast as some supercars, and that makes the "GT" and "3" really good for anything hot.

Porsche's next hot Cayman built on the new 981-type platform will most likely be called the Cayman GT3. The changed was hinted to Australian magazine CarAdvice by Andreas, Preuninger, none other than the chief engineer of the new 911 GT3.

He said tests have already begun, but a final decision has not been made. Yeah, sure, like Porsche ever goes back on a decision like this. A track-focused Cayman sounds like something really cool for Stuttgart to offer, especially since they have so much track-to-road car experience.

Why wouldn't it cannibalize the 911 GT3?

Probably for the same reason the Cayman S doesn't cannibalise the 911 Carrera.*

*OK, there are probably some customers who have bought a Cayman S instead of a 911, but I suspect the vast majority who can afford a 911, purchase a 911.

I agree with all of you, it would be outrageous. But it almost sounds to good to be true.
